NOISE AND/OR VIBRATION FROM BLOWER MOTOR WITH OR
WITHOUT LACK OF AIRFLOW FROM PANEL REGISTERS - BUILT ON
OR BEFORE 28-FEB-2017

ISSUE
Some 2013-2017 Escape vehicles built on or before 28-Feb-2017 may exhibit a noise and/or vibration from the climate
control blower motor with or without a lack of airflow from panel registers and may also have an odor. This concern may
be due to small animals that can enter the blower motor housing area through the air inlet duct and cause damage to the
air inlet duct assembly and/or blower motor assembly. The small animals may deposit foreign material in the blower motor
assembly and air inlet housing that may cause lack of airflow, noise and/or vibration.
ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1. Check the vehicle build date. Was the vehicle built on or before 28-Feb-2017?
a. Yes - proceed to Step 2.
b. No - this article does not apply. Refer to Workshop Manual (WSM), Section 412-00 for normal diagnostics.
2. Does the vehicle exhibit a noise and/or vibration from the climate control blower motor when set on high fan speed
with or without a lack of airflow from panel registers?
a. Yes - proceed to Step 3.
b. No - this article does not apply. Refer to WSM, Section 412-00 for normal diagnostics.
3. Remove the air inlet duct and blower motor assembly. Refer to WSM, Section 412-00.
4. Using a shop vacuum remove any foreign material or debris. Remove any remaining foreign material or debris with a
cloth using only soap and water.
a. Do not use other cleaning products as they may damage system components.
5. Inspect inlet air duct assembly for damage. Refer to WSM, Section 412-00. Is there visible damage to inlet air duct
assembly?
a. Yes - replace inlet air duct assembly with a new inlet air duct and screen assembly. Proceed to Step 8.
b. No - proceed to Step 6.
6. Remove the existing gasket from the inlet air duct assembly. If required use a suitable scraper for plastic surfaces.
Remove any remaining gasket material residue with a cloth using only soap and water.
7. Install the new inlet air duct gasket with screen onto existing air inlet duct assembly.
8. Inspect blower motor assembly. Refer to WSM, Section 412-00. Is there visible damage to blower motor assembly?
a. Yes - replace blower motor assembly. Proceed to Step 9.
b. No - proceed to Step 9.
9. Inspect cabin air filter. Refer to WSM, Section 412-00. Is there damage or excessive debris within the cabin air filter?
a. Yes - replace the cabin air filter. Refer to WSM, Section 412-00. Proceed to Step 10.
b. No - proceed to Step 10.

10. To install the blower motor assembly and air inlet duct, reverse the removal procedure. Refer to WSM, Section 412-00.
