SERVICE BULLETIN
Reason for release
: A new CG inspector brought to our attention, ducks outfitted with PVC bilge discharge piping are not in compliance with CFR 46
182.510 (b)
minimum pipe diameter must be 1 inch and 182.530 (e-7)
A positive shut off valve must be installed and
182.720(1)
non metallic piping
is prohibited from penetrating the hull unless a shut off valve is installed directly at the hull penetration.

The existing PVC piping installed is not in compliance with 182.510 (b) because the (ID) inside diameter of the PVC pipe is less than 1 inch.
If the PVC pipe was in compliance with 182.510 the system would still not be in compliance with 182.530 or 182.720 unless a metallic
shut off valve is installed at the PVC pipes thru-hull penetration.
In working with the USCG we have resolved this issue by:
1. Complying with 182.510 by replacing all PVC piping with 1 inch diameter stainless steel pipe. See photo

2. Appeal 182.530 - 182.720. Ride The Duck has appealed the requirement of this regulation for the reasons listed in the
Letter of Appeal
RTDI Fleet Operations will notify you once the appeal process is completed.
Directions to comply with 182.510
1. Identify how many PVC discharge pipes need to be replaced and communicate the amount via phone to RTDI Parts.

Installation Instructions:
1. Disconnect the flexible hose and remove existing PVC discharge piping
2. Enlarge the bilge piping hull penetration hole to accept the 1 ⅛” (OD) outside diameter stainless steel pipe.
3. Due to the various configurations, fit - up is required prior to welding the round flange to the pipe. Fit up Instructions:
a. Slide stainless pipe down the hole
b. Slide stainless round flange onto the stainless pipe (flange will bolt or text screw to outer deck). See Photo

c. Set the pipe at the appropriate angle necessary to ensure the flange sets flush to outer decking and the flex hose connection
can be made. Ensure the installation will not result in chafing of flex hose or rigid pipe.
d. With the pipe and flange arrangement set to the appropriate angle, tack weld flange to pipe.
e. Remove the pipe from the duck and finish weld on the bench. (use stainless wire mig or stainless tig filler rod)
f. Reinstall pipe, apply marine sealant between the flange and deck before bolting down. Connect flex hose with double clamps.
● At your discretion; In some cases, you may find it more practical to cut the pipe short to (roughly 6 inches long
overall) and replace the existing flex pipe with longer hose to reach the shortened pipe.
4. Test for leaks. During testing, the bilge water should force the outlets check valve (i.e. flapper) open and flapper should close (without
assistance) once the water is no longer forcing the valve open.
NOTE:
Piping system ordered through RTDI Parts department will come with the check valve (i.e. flapper) welded to one end of the pipe and the
round flange separate (i.e not welded to the pipe). If manufacturing locally, the spring attached to the purchased check valve must be permanently
removed.
