Issue
• With the introduction of the ISX15 CM2350 X101 product, the oil control piston ring
changed to a directional design. The directional oil control piston ring is now
backwards compatible with all single camshaft 15 liter engines.

• Directional oil control piston rings have been installed incorrectly during field repair
events, leading to increased engine lubricating oil consumption.
Service Instructions
• Correct orientation of directional oil control piston ring is critical for proper engine
operation.
• For installation information, see corresponding Service Manual. Reference Procedure
001-047 in Section 1.
• See Part Identification Section below for information on how to correctly identify the oil
control piston ring design.
Part Identification
• Directional oil control piston rings are marked with “TOP” on top face of piston ring.
See Figure 1 below.

• Directional oil control piston rings can be identified by round oil drain holes in center of
piston ring. See Figure 2, Item 1 below.
• Non-directional (symmetrical) oil control piston rings do not have markings and have
slot shaped oil drains in center of piston ring. See Figure 2, Item 2 below.
