SERVICE ACTION: FRONT SEAT HEADREST ELEVATOR
MODULE REPLACEMENT (SA177)

This bulletin provides the procedure to replace the headrest elevator module of some K900 (KH)
vehicles, produced from March 20, 2014 through September 19, 2014 and equipped with
manually adjustable headrests, which may exhibit difficulties when adjusting the headrest
height. To prevent and/or correct this condition, replace the headrest elevator module with a
new one by following the service procedure outlined below. Kia is requesting the completion of
this Service Action on all affected vehicles, including dealer stock, prior to delivery.

Headrest Elevator Module

 NOTICE
A Service Action is a repair program without customer notification that is performed
during the warranty period. Any dealer requesting to perform this repair outside the
warranty period will require DPSM approval.
Repair status for a VIN is provided on WebDCS (Service> Warranty Coverage>
Warranty Coverage Inquiry> Campaign Information). Not completed Recall / Service
Action reports are available on WebDCS (Consumer Affairs> Not Completed Recall>
Recall VIN> Select Report), which includes a list of affected vehicles.

1.

Set the Ignition to OFF position.

2.

Remove the seat back board by
referring to applicable workshop
manual on KGIS (see below).
Body (Interior & Exterior) > Front
Seat > Front Seat Back Cover >
Repair Procedures > Replacement

3.

Locate the left side seat elevator
module, harness and the harness
connector.

Disconnect the male portion of the
harness connector and remove the
female portion of the connector from
the bracket.

5.

Use a flathead screwdriver to remove the
headrest shaft from the elevator module
and remove the headrest.

6.

Remove the cable tie securing the
harness to the cross wires.

 NOTICE
Make sure to secure the harness in
the
same
position
during
reassembly.

Grasp the elevator and use a flathead
screwdriver to pry the left and right
locks, until the elevator can be lowered
by hand.

Wrap the harness around the cross
wires and the elevator, as shown, to
keep it from moving vertically.

Use a flathead screwdriver to pry the
two (2) left side headrest guide
retaining lugs.

 NOTICE
Repeat this step for the right side
headrest guide.

10.

Pull the two (2) headrest guides
through the top of the seat.

11.

Remove three (3) seat cover retainers
and four (4) J-Hooks securing the seat
cover to the seat frame. Then, gently
pull the seat cover material over the
top of the seat.

CAUTION
To prevent tearing at the seams, be
careful when reinstalling the
leather material over the seat
frame.

Locate and remove two (2) screws and
two (2) washers securing the elevator
module to the seat frame, as shown.

 NOTICE
Save all hardware for reuse.

13.

Release the harness, previously
wrapped around the elevator module
on step 8, and remove the elevator
module from the seat frame, as shown.

14.

Install the new headrest elevator
module by reversing the removal
process. NOTE: The chamfered ends
of the replacement elevator should
face towards the installer.

Make sure the threaded inserts on the
replacement elevator protrude through
the seat frame mounting locations,
prior to installing the retaining
hardware.

 NOTICE
Pay close attention when installing
the replacement headrest elevator,
as it will only fit in one direction. If
improperly installed, the headrest
elevator will not seat properly
against the seat frame mounting
locations.

16.

Replace the right front seat elevator
module by following the procedure
above (steps 2~15).

17.

Test the operation of each headrest to
confirm proper operation.

18.

Turn the ignition ON to monitor bulb
check on instrument cluster and ensure
air bag warning lamp extinguishes
afterwards.
