CONDITIONS

Customer Complaint:
Motor Coach Industries ("MCI") has become aware that customers may experience the MIL, Check Engine
and/or the Stop Engine diagnostic trouble codes or tell-tale activations on J4500 series coaches equipped
with a DD13 GHG17 engine, due to high DPF hydrocarbon absorption during high idle operation.
The installation of a retrofit harness in addition to updating the multiplex program and engine parameters will
enable the DPF to regenerate during fast idle operation.

Cause:
GHG17 DD EPA platform parameters preventing DPF regeneration during fast idle operation.

Corrective Action:
MCI will remedy the affected coaches at no cost to the customer by installing a retrofit harness kit and updating the
multiplex program and engine parameters. However, proper repairs will require the use of specialized equipment
and therefore MCI strongly urges customers of the J4500 coaches listed in the table on Page 2 to make an
appointment as soon as possible by calling the MCI Customer Service Line at 1-800-241-2947, to have the repair
performed by trained technicians who have the necessary equipment.
Until the remedy is installed, MCI recommends to avoid the use of the Fast Idle feature.

Service Procedure:

Read this entire procedure before beginning work.
Use Safe Shop Practices At All Times.

1. Turn the main battery disconnect switch to the OFF position.
2. Chock both sides of the tires.
3. Open both the curbside and roadside #3 baggage bay compartment doors. Ensure the compartment doors
are secured in the open position.
4. Locate the rear junction box on the roadside of the #3 baggage bay compartment. Open the access door.

5. In the LH, lower corner of the rear junction box, locate the VMM V27 module ( refer to Item 1 / Figure 1 ).

6. Locate the RJ-P272 connector of VMM V27 ( refer to Figure 2 ). Locate Pin 10 and remove wire 0061B.
Heat shrink the end of wire 0061B and tyrap back.

7. Connect deutsch terminal of wire 1021 in Pin 10 of the RJ-P272 connector.
8. Locate the CPC module in the rear junction box ( refer to Item 2 / Figure 1 ).
9. Locate connector XST1 in the CPC module ( refer to Figure 3 ). Populate Pin 11 with AMP terminal side of
the 1021 wire.

10. Locate Pin 9 in the RJ-P272 connector. Populate with deutsch terminal of the wire 1022.

11. Locate the power distribution panel in the rear junction box ( refer to Item 3 / Figure 1 ).
12. On the power distribution panel, locate J27 clean ground stud ( refer to Figure 4 ). Remove and retain the
nut from the J27 stud. Orient and place the ring terminal of wire 1022 on the stud. Re-install the nut. Torque
nut to 17.5-19.5 in-lbs.

13. Using tyraps, secure the wires.

14. Refer to the latest revision of MCI Procedure 7-129 for the outlined procedure steps to update the multiplex
program and engine parameters utilizing Diagnostic Link Professional.

Field Change Program Conditions:
Specialized programming equipment is required to perform this retrofit.
The parts required for this change will be supplied without charge.
A labor allowance of 0.5 hours will be granted for the procedure described in this bulletin on applicable J4500
Series coaches.
This labor allowance will be credited to your MCI Fleet Support Parts Account on receipt of the attached
“MCI Field Change Program Verification Form” and a “Warranty Claim Form” as detailed in your Owner Warranty
manual to MCI’s Warranty department. A “MCI Field Change Program Verification Form” needs to be submitted for
each VIN affected. Photocopy the attached “MCI Field Change Program Verification Form” as required for the
number of affected coaches in your fleet.
This program will end on April 14, 2017.
