BACKGROUND
During manufacturing, three spot welds inside the top of the driver’s side sliding door were not properly finished with
primer. The untreated metal is susceptible to corrosion.
CORRECTIVE ACTION
Remove any rust or corrosion, and apply primer to the metal in the affected areas.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
NOTE:
• To make preparing the aluminum foil masking easier, apply the tape to the aluminum foil while it’s on a table or
bench, then press the tape firmly against the aluminum to ensure there are no gaps.

•

Make sure the primer only contacts the flange area shown in this bulletin because the primer may damage other
parts of the vehicle.

1. Remove the privacy screen hanger clips.

2. Carefully remove the window run channel, and let it hang inside the vehicle.

3. Clean the entire inner and outer flanges of the window run channel holder with an alcohol wipe.

4. Mask the rear door with aluminum foil as shown by taping a sheet of aluminum foil to the top inner flange of the
driver’s side sliding door. Make sure the aluminum foil extends past the length of the door.

5. Apply a piece of tape over the chrome trim. Make sure there is enough tape to cover the bottom of the chrome trim.
NOTE:
• Make sure the tape covers the chrome trim but does not cover the inner run channel sheet metal to ensure the
primer is properly applied to the areas affected by the corrosion.
• Make sure the strip of tape extends past the length of the door and that there are no gaps between the foil and
tape as noted.

6. Apply a sheet of aluminum foil to the tape covering the chrome trim to cover the roof from over-spray.

7. Apply a sheet of aluminum foil to cover the lower part of the sliding door.

8. Apply a sheet of aluminum foil to cover the driver’s door.

Make sure the aluminum foil overlaps the aluminum foil protecting the lower door and roof

9. Apply a sheet of aluminum foil to cover the rear part of the vehicle.

Make sure the aluminum foil overlaps the aluminum foil protecting the lower door and roof
Fold it over toward the tape.

10. Apply a second sheet of aluminum foil onto the roof to be used as a paint hood when spraying primer.

11. Using the mirror and a pen, locate and mark the three locations of the welds/corrosion on the tape as shown. These
marks will help you identify the areas that need sanding and priming.

12. Using sandpaper, remove all of the corrosion from the flange area.

13. Once the corrosion is removed, thoroughly clean the entire flange area with an alcohol wipe to remove all dust and
particles.
14. Shake the primer vigorously for 1 minute after the mixing ball begins to rattle. Hold the aluminum sheet as shown to
contain any over spray. Apply three thin coats of primer to the affected areas allowing each coat to dry for 2
minutes before applying the next coat.
NOTE:
• Shake the primer often during use and before each coat.
• Once you’ve finished the third coat, turn the can upside down and spray it for a few seconds to clear the spray
tube and nozzle. This will allow you to use the primer for any future vehicles that need repair.

15. Using a light and a mirror, make sure the flange area is properly covered.

16. Carefully remove all the aluminum foil and tape. Make sure no drips of primer contact the vehicle.
17. Using an alcohol wipe, clean the window run channel to remove any corrosion or contaminant stains from the
rubber.

18. Install the window run channel using the white trim tool included in the kit.
19. Check that the window works properly by raising and lowering it at least 3 times to make sure it doesn’t bind.
20. Install the privacy screen hangers.
