RE: Stop Sale/Safety Recall: 2003 MDX SRS Unit Malfunction
On September 18, 2013, Acura notified NHTSA of a Stop Sale order and Safety Recall for some 2003 MDX units. Any
used units in dealer stock must be repaired per S/B 13-038, Safety Recall: Electrical Interference May Cause Inadvertent
Airbag Deployment prior to sale. On September 19th, refer to VIN Inquiry to determine which units in your inventory
are affected. Acura expects to begin client notification in late October 2013.
Note: Affected vehicles should not be sold until the repair has been performed. Should an unrepaired vehicle cause any
injury or damage because of the required recall repair, the dealership will be solely responsible to the damaged party,
and will be required to defend and indemnify Acura for any resulting claims.
Basic Problem
Electrical noise caused by some vehicle systems may cause damage to the SRS control unit. In some cases, this
damage may lead to spontaneous deployment of the airbags.
Repair Information
All affected vehicles require replacement of the SRS sub-harness with a redesigned sub-harness that includes a noise
suppressor.
Parts Information
Replacement SRS unit sub-harness kits are currently on order. Additional details will be distributed once parts are made
available. Acura will issue a second iN message with additional parts details once kits become available for order.
Warranty Information
Warranty and repair information will be detailed in S/B 13-038, which will be posted to ISIS once replacement parts are
made available.
Service Bulletin
A placeholder version of service bulletin 13-038 will be posted to ISIS on September 19, 2013, in support of this safety
recall. Once parts are available for order, the bulletin will be revised to include repair, parts, and warranty information.
Customer Notification
Acura expects to begin client notification in late October 2013.
As always, please be sure to check in VIN status to determine if a particular vehicle is eligible for this recall.
