CORPORATION HAS DECIDED THAT A DEFECT RELATING TO MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY EXISTS IN SPECIFIC MOTORHOMES BUILT ON FREIGHTLINER CHASSIS. THIS RECALL IS THE RESULT OF INFORMATION PROVIDED TO NEWMAR BY DAIMLER TRUCKS NORTH AMERICA. NHTSA #16V 280, TC# 2016-304 ON CERTAIN MOTORHOMES BUILT ON FREIGHTLINER CHASSIS, THE POWER STEERING FLUID TEMPERATURE MAY EXCEED THE HOSE MATERIAL RATING ON CERTAIN REAR ENGINE CHASSIS BUILT WITH SPECIFIC 18K AND 20K FRONT AXLES USED IN MOTORHOMES APPLICATIONS. THE FAILURE MODE ON THESE SYSTEMS MAY RESULT IN LOSS OF POWER STEERING DURING LOW-SPEED DRIVING CONDITIONS. SUDDEN LOSS OF STEERING ASSIST ON THIS VEHICLE WITHOUT WARNING, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH CAUSING INJURY AND/OR PROPERTY DAMAGE.

Description
Newmar Corporation has decided that a defect relating to motor vehicle safety exists in specific motorhomes
built on Freightliner chassis. This recall is the result of information provided to Newmar by Daimler Trucks
North America. NHTSA #16v 280, TC# 2016-304
Issue: On certain motorhomes built on Freightliner chassis, the power steering fluid temperature may exceed
the hose material rating on certain rear engine chassis built with specific 18k and 20k front axles used in
motorhomes applications. The failure mode on these systems may result in loss of power steering during lowspeed driving conditions. Sudden loss of steering assist on this vehicle without warning, increasing the risk of a
crash causing injury and/or property damage.
The affected 2014 Essex and 2015 Mountain Aire, London Aire, and Essex motorhomes were built between
5/30/2013 and 6/08/2015.
Recommended Action
Correction: Daimler Trucks North American LLC will provide the work instructions and replace the suspect
hose with a hose with a higher temperature rating at no cost to the customer.
Repair Procedure
Contact Daimler Trucks North America LLC via e-mail [email protected] or call
800-547-0712 for work instructions and to locate a Qualified Service Center near you. Qualified Service Centers
should follow instructions from DTNA regarding the return or disposal of old parts.
Recall # 16v 121 DTNA has set the repair time at 13 hours for installation of new hoses.
Note: Newmar will not be authorizing this repair. DTNA will authorize and schedule this repair. If you need
assistance contacting DTNA, call Newmar @ 866-290-5371.

This notice is sent to you as a Newmar Dealer in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and
Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Newmar Corporation has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety
exists in specific Newmar recreational vehicles.
The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act requires that each vehicle which is subject to a recall campaign
of this type must be satisfactorily repaired within a reasonable time after the owner has tendered it for repair. A
failure to adequately repair within 60 days after tender of a vehicle is prima facie evidence of failure to repair
within a reasonable time. To avoid providing these problematic solutions, every effort must be made to promptly
schedule an appointment with each owner and to repair their vehicle as soon as possible. Vehicle owners are being
notified of this recall. If the condition is not remedied within a reasonable time, they are instructed on how to
contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
REASON FOR THIS RECALL

conditions. Sudden loss of steering assist on this vehicle without warning could lead to a vehicle crash. Correction:
The suspect hose will be replaced with a hose with a higher temperature rating, this will be done at no cost to the
customer.
These motor homes require immediate service. Continued use poses a potential safety hazard.

Dealers are to provide to all customers/owner vehicles the service of completing this campaign at no charge to
the customer/owner regardless of vehicle age, vehicle mileage, or ownership at the time of repair.

built on Freightliner chassis. This recall is the result of information provided to us by Daimler Trucks North America.
On certain motorhomes, the power steering fluid temperature may exceed the hose material rating. This could
cause the power steering hose to rupture without warning during low-speed driving. A leaking power steering hose
could result in the loss of power steering assist and increased steering effort, which depending on the driver's
reactions and traffic conditions, could increase the risk of a crash resulting in injury and/or damage to property.
Correction: Dealers will replace the affected power steering hose with one that has a higher temperature rating.
These motor homes require immediate service. Continued use poses a potential safety hazard.
This recall applies to 2014 Essex and 2015 Mountain Aire and London Aire Class A motor homes.
Built between 7/22/2013 and 1/22/2015.
