Symptom

Low power is reported on a new engine or after installing the latest engine control
module (ECM) calibration code revision.

Root Cause


The Engine Powertrain Protection feature has been enabled, which reduces torque
output in first and second gear.

Verify the engine exhibits reduced power output in first and second gear.
Using INSITE™ electronic service tool, verify that the Powertrain Protection entry in the
Features and Parameters section is present and enabled.

Description of Change
The Powertrain Protection feature, which reduces torque output in first and second gears, was
enabled in new ECM calibration codes to improve engine and driveline durability.
Customer Communication
The implementation of the Powertrain Protection feature has been demonstrated to reduce
piston malfunctions. By leaving this feature enabled, the customer may see increased uptime
and cost advantages associated with the increased durability of the powertrain. In some
applications and duty cycles, the default Powertrain Protection settings will produce lower
power than the customer desires. The customer should weigh the benefits of powertrain
protection against any reduction in performance when choosing the settings within Powertrain
Protection.
The customer should be made aware of the benefits of the Powertrain Protection feature in
reducing the cost and downtime associated with powertrain malfunctions.
Resolution
Powertrain Protection parameters can be adjusted, or the feature disabled entirely.
Solution 1: Adjust Powertrain Protection Torque Output
To increase torque output incrementally to find an acceptable performance level:







Connect to the engine with INSITE™ electronic service tool.
Open the Features and Parameters section and expand the Powertrain Protection
section.
Change the following parameters as required to provide acceptable performance:
 Limit 2 Torque Limit 2: Increase in 40 foot pound increments
 Limit 3 Torque Limit 3: Increase in 40 foot pound increments
Test drive the vehicle and readjust until performance is acceptable.

NOTE: Torque Limit 3 adjusts torque in first gear. Torque Limit 2 adjusts torque in
second gear.
Solution 2: Disable Powertrain Protection
To disable Powertrain Protection and restore full torque in all gears:




Connect to the engine with INSITE™ electronic service tool.
Open the Features and Parameters section and locate the Powertrain Protection section.
Set the Powertrain Protection parameter to Disabled.

Warranty Considerations






If a customer chooses to disable the Powertrain Protection feature after calibrating the
ECM to a calibration code revision equipped with Powertrain Protection and coverage is
available for the ECM calibration code, Cummins® warranty will reimburse for restoring
the programmable parameters to their pre-calibration state using the available coverage
with fail code EQPEAW.
Cummins® warranty will not reimburse for costs associated with finding an acceptable
level of Powertrain Protection using incremental torque adjustments.
Warranty coverage for a subsequent engine malfunction caused by a defect in
Cummins® materials and/or workmanship is not affected by the customer’s choice to
enable or disable the Powertrain Protection feature.
