Issue
All 15L ISX engines may experience lubricating oil aeration due to grooves worn in the
lubricating oil pump suction tube bore. Typical engine complaints for this issue are low oil
pressure and poor braking performance. For engines with long (rear) suction tubes, the P-clip
has been found to contribute to the lubricating oil pump bore wear by not allowing the suction
tube to center itself in the bore.
Worn grooves can be caused by the suction tube (ridges on both sides of the o-ring) being
pulled into contact with the lube pump bore. When the depth of the grooves reaches the
approximate amount of crush on the o-ring, the o-ring may not seal air on the side opposite
the grooves because the o-ring is no longer compressed.

During 15L ISX engine repairs that require the oil pan to be removed, determine if the engine
is equipped with a rear suction tube and a suction tube P-clip.

Grooves in Lubricating Oil Pump
If an engine being repaired is equipped with a rear suction tube P-clip, remove the P-clip.
Omitting the P-clip is a method of preventing potential future wear.

Effect of P-Clip
In engine disassembly situations where observation confirms that there is a groove worn in the
lubricating pump suction tube bore, the P-clip should also be removed. Since worn grooves are
not located at the sealing surface for the o-ring, the presence of grooves does not cause the
o-ring to leak. Removal of the P-clip will allow the o-ring to center the suction tube properly in
the bore, allow the o-ring to properly seal, and prevent any additional lube pump bore wear.
NOTE: The lubricating oil pump does not need to be replaced unless symptoms indicate
the groove is causing oil aeration.
