Brake Shoe, Replacement

FSB 511-001, Brake Shoe, Replacement (Steer Axle)

It has been reported from the field since the release of the new stopping distance brake
packages on 07/01/2011 that steer axle brake noise may present itself after a period of time.
The current production brake shoes on the steer axle, although they may produce noise, are
safe and will perform as designed. The part numbers listed below are new brake shoe
packages that may reduce or eliminate the steer axle brake noise issue. It is required that the
drum surfaces be thoroughly scuffed prior to re-install to achieve the best possible result.

Repair Procedure
1 Chock the wheels and release the parking brakes.
2 Lift and stabilize the vehicle by placing the axle on jack stands.
3 Remove wheel nut covers if applicable. Remove tire and wheel assemblies from the
vehicle.
4 Back off brakes, each side at the slack adjusters.
5 Remove the brake drums.
6 Remove the brake shoes, brake springs and rollers from each side.
7 Install the replacement brake shoes and the replacement spring kit on both sides.
8 Use a rotary sanding tool with Scotch-brite discs and scuff both drums enough to remove
the existing glaze.
9 Install the brake drums over the replacement brake shoes.
10 Install the tire and wheel assemblies. Torque wheel nuts to 610 Nm (450 ft-lb) and install
wheel nut covers, if applicable.
11 Adjust the brakes to specifications.
12 Set the parking brake and remove the wheel chocks.
13 Jack the axle up and remove the jackstands. Lower the vehicle.
