Bulletin Classification: This campaign bulletin addresses a known non-safety-related condition and provides
recommended technical diagnosis and repair procedures. Apply this procedure to all vehicles in the affected VIN range
listed. These instructions assume knowledge of motor vehicle and high voltage electrical component repairs, and should
only be executed by trained professionals. Tesla

to properly follow these instructions or repairs attempted by unqualified individuals.
This Service Bulletin supersedes SB-16-17-001 R1, dated 26-Feb-16. Each content change is marked by a vertical line in
the left margin. Discard the previous version and replace it with this one.
Condition
On some Model X vehicles, the rear door anti-pinch wiring harness might be loose. This could prevent the rear door from
closing fully on the first request, requiring a second request to fully close the door.
Correction
Replace the rear upper door trim panel(s) if incorrect wire solder is found at the anti-pinch sensor Electronic Control Unit
(ECU). Inspect for proper routing and securing of the wiring harnesses on trim panels, and resecure the wiring harnesses
if necessary.

Procedure
1. Carefully remove the LH and RH rear upper door trim panels (refer to Service Manual procedure 15132302).
CAUTION: Do not use excessive force when removing the trim panels to prevent separation of the wiring harness
tape strips.
2. Inspect the LH and RH wiring harnesses:
If the wiring harnesses are bundled together and secured with black polyester electrical tape (Figure 1), continue
to step 3.
If the wiring harnesses are separated (Figure 2) or are secured with duct tape or white textile tape (Figures 3 and
4), skip to step 4.

3. Inspect the LH and RH wiring harnesses near the anti-pinch sensor ECU printed circuit boards:
If the harnesses are secured with black polyester electrical tape (Figure 5), reinstall the LH and RH upper door
trim panels and discontinue this procedure.
If the harnesses are not secured with black polyester electrical tape (Figure 6), continue this procedure.

4. Resecure the LH wiring harnesses:
a. Inspect the wire solder joint at the anti-pinch sensor printed circuit boards (Figure 7):

If the wiring harness is attached to the printed circuit board with a small amount of solder and no exposed
wires (Figure 8), continue this procedure.
If the wiring harness is attached to the printed circuit board with excessive amounts of solder (Figure 9),
discard and replace the rear door upper trim panel (refer to Service Manual procedure 15132302), and
skip to step 5.

b. Remove the tape that secures the wiring harness to the trim panel.
c.
Clean the surface where the tape will be applied (Figures 10–12) with an alcohol wipe. Allow the surface to
dry before continuing.

d. Apply adhesion promoter where the tape will be applied.
NOTE: Wait 60 seconds for the adhesion promoter to dry before continuing.
e. Route the wiring harnesses as shown in Figures 10–12.

f.
Secure the wiring harnesses to the trim panel using the new black polyester electrical tape. Cut each tape
strip approximately 7 cm in length. When applying the tape, center the harness so that there is at least 20 mm
of tape on each side of the harness (Figure 13).
CAUTION: Make sure that the harness stays taut when securing it to the trim panel. If the harness has any
slack, the closing motion of the door might accidentally trigger the anti-pinch sensor and prevent the door from
closing.

g. Use a trim tool to apply pressure on both sides of the tape to ensure good adhesion to the trim panel (Figure
14).

5. Reinstall the LH rear upper door trim panel (refer to Service Manual procedure 15132302).
6. Close the LH rear door and verify that the door closes fully on the first try.

7. Resecure the RH wiring harness:
a. Inspect the wire solder joint at the anti-pinch sensor printed circuit boards (Figure 7).
If the wires are soldered to the printed circuit board (Figure 8), continue this procedure.
If the wires are soldered to the printed circuit board with a visible amount of solder (Figure 9), discard
and replace the rear door upper trim panel (refer to Service Manual procedure 15132302), and skip to
step 9.
b. Remove the tape that secures the wiring harness to the trim panel.
c.
Clean the surface where the tape will be applied (Figures 15–17) with an alcohol wipe. Allow the surface to
dry before continuing.

d. Apply adhesion promoter where the tape will be applied.
NOTE: Wait 60 seconds for the adhesion promoter to dry before continuing.
e. Route the wiring harnesses as shown in Figures 15–17.
f.
Cut strips of tape long enough to have 20 mm of tape on each side of the harness (Figure 13)
g. Secure the wiring harnesses to the trim panel using the new black polyester electrical tape.

CAUTION: Make sure that the harness stays taut when securing it to the trim panel. If the harness has any slack, the
closing motion of the door might accidentally trigger the anti-pinch sensor and prevent the door from closing.
h. Use a trim tool to apply pressure on the tape to ensure good adhesion to the trim panel (Figure 14).
8. Carefully reinstall the rear upper door trim panels (refer to Service Manual procedure 15132302).
CAUTION: Using excessive force during trim panel reinstallation might loosen the wiring harness.
9. Cycle each rear door 5 times to verify for proper operation. Escalate a Toolbox session if any of the rear doors
malfunctions.
