Topic: Leaking oil bath hubs
Please read this letter in its entirety to understand what the issue was and the solution.
Over the past 6 months we have had a number of what appeared to be leaking oil bath hubs evidenced
by water in the oil. The mystery was that many of these trailers have never been used, and had never
been in the water. EZ Loader over the past 30 days has brought in engineers from Chevron Oil
Company and Dexter to analyze our current oil and find out the cause of the water in the hubs and how
to solve it.
The final analysis showed that the oil we had been using had an emulsifying agent in it that caused any
water to bind to the oil as opposed to staying separate from the oil, which gave it an immediate milky
appearance. That is the purpose of an emulsifying agent. It only takes a few drops to accomplish the
milky look. These few drops could have been produced from condensation inside the hub after
assembly, moisture in the hub prior to assembly, a high humidity atmosphere during assembly, etc.
In the vast majority of the hubs that had the milky appearance, one oil change solved the problem as it
got rid of those few drops of water in the hub. A few drops of water is not an issue for the bearings, but
often creates confusion for the end users.
Please note: If there is a leaking seal, there will be evidence of oil leaking out as well as water getting in,
and this is not what we’ve seen in the majority of the cases. We’ve seen evidence of water in the hub,
but little to no evidence of oil leaking out, so in most of these cases, we are back to addressing the few
drops of water in the hub from the assembly process.
Effective 2/24/16, EZ Loader has implemented several steps to eliminate this issue. EZ Loader is using a
new oil that does not have an emulsifying agent in it. In other words the oil and water will stay separate
and not mix. It also has the highest rating on the market for an environmentally safe oil. This will solve
the majority of the milky hub issues we have recently had. EZ Loader has also purchased new sealed
system metering guns that will not only put the exact same amount of oil in every hub, but will cut down
on possible water contamination of the oil prior to filling the hub.
The key to identifying a seal that is actually leaking is the oil level. With the new metering guns, all the
hubs on the trailer should be the same level. A lower level may indicate a leaking seal, and the seal area
should be inspected for oil leakage.
The new oil is Chevron Clarity machine Oil 150 and is compatible with the previously used oil in the
hubs.
