Weld Inspection
Brake Chamber Bracket and Bottom Plate U-Bolt Attachment
SAF-HOLLAND® has determined that there is potential for
non-conforming welds on the 5" round SAF® axles/chassis units
manufactured between June 1, 2015 and September 20, 2015.

Issue 1:
Missing welds on the brake chamber bracket attachment to the
5" diameter SAF® axle tube on CIMC chassis. There should be a
total of 4 full length welds per bracket. Some only have a tack
weld or no weld (Figure 1).

Inspection Required:
All brake chamber bracket welds need to be visually inspected to
see that a proper length weld (Figures 2, 3, and 4) has been
applied to each mounting leg of the bracket. Figure 3 is an
overall view of our axle showing the chamber bracket welding.
NOTE: There are 4 welds per bracket. Each mounting leg has
two (2) welds, one (1) on each side (Figure 3).
A non-conforming axle weld would have only a small tack
weld or no weld in any of the locations (Figure 1). If this
situation is found, the axles/chassis units MUST be tagged
with an out of service tag. These units will need to be repaired
following instructions in XL-TA20017RM-en-US.

If the bracket weld has already failed and come off the axle
(Figure 1) the axles/chassis units MUST be tagged with
an out of service tag. These units will need to be repaired
following instructions in XL-TA20017RM-en-US.

NOTE: Figures 2, 3, and 4 are of bare axles. Units being
inspected will be painted to OEM specifications.
NOTE: Figures 2 and 4 are close-up of individual good welds.

Issue 2:
Missing weld on the bottom plate U-bolt attachment (side of
the bottom plate to the axle). Refer to Figure 5.
Visually inspect the bottom plate weld to axle on each spring
perch attachment. Good welds MUST be within Figure 6's
specifications.
If a non-conforming weld is found, the axles/chassis units MUST
be tagged with an out of service tag. These units will need to be
repaired following instructions in XL-TA20018RM-en-US.

Identification Marks for
Inspections Completed:
Mark each good unit inspected with a white ink dot next to the
serial tag on the axle (Figure 7).
Record the chassis unit number, VIN number, and axle serial
number in a log and with the repair authorization number.
