Subject: Ignition remains on when ignition switch is turned off
Models: R nineT (K21)
Details: BMW Motorrad has ascertained that the ignition switch of the R nineT (K21) may exhibit a malfunction.
When the ignition key has been turned to the off position, the ignition and engine remain on.
Each time the ignition key is switched on, current flows through the microswitch contacts. This microswitch
supplies electric current to the entire flow vehicle electrical system (KL 15). When in ABS regulation the ABS
control unit requires a relatively high current. This can cause spikes in amp flow to occur and the contacts to
become welded together. If this happens the contacts no longer separate when the ignition key is turned to the
off position.
Vehicles affected: All vehicles produced up until November 04, 2014.
Production Solution: As of November 05, 2014 a modified wiring harness has been used in series production
identified by "INFO 02" on the wire harness tag (see wiring-harness variants). With this wiring harness the power
supply (KL 15) for the ABS control unit is switched via pin 32 of the ZFE (central frame and suspension electronics
control unit)

During a period from March 30, 2015 or from vehicle identification number Z608158 onward, 110 vehicles were
fitted with the old standard wiring harness (identified by INFO/ INFO 01 ). The service solution was fitted to these
vehicles at the factory and are identified by "INFO 03" (handwritten change from "INFO 01" to "03").

Wiring-harness variants
The grey label with the part number is attached to the vehicle wiring harness near the diagnostic connector. Check
the "INFO" number to identify the variant.

INFO 03: From March 30, 2015 until April 01, 2015,
the "INFO 01" version of the wiring harness (part
number 61 11 8 548 701) was installed together with a
retrofitted load-shedding relay (part number 61 12
8 553 659).

Note: Ascertaining whether the load-shedding relay with additional wiring harness has already been retrofitted
is a matter of removing the right side cover and visually checking at the right side of the vehicle.
If the grey label of the additional wiring harness and
the white mark are visible at the point indicated
(arrow), the vehicle is already fitted with the additional
wiring harness with load-shedding relay.

Standard wiring harness part number 61 11 8 548 701 with the "INFO 02" identifier was superseded by part
number 61 11 8 552 922 from April 07, 2015 onward (VIN Z608381 onward). These two part numbers have the
same technical status (KL 15 supply to the ABS by the ZFE).
If a vehicle with the additional wiring harness and load-shedding relay has to be fitted with a NEW wiring harness,
the only version supplied is the superseded part number 61 11 8 552 922 wiring harness. It is then no longer
necessary to use the additional wiring harness with load-shedding relay.

Service Solution: In the event of a complaint on a vehicle built before November 05, 2014, install the loadshedding relay retrofit kit and a new ignition switch. Once the system has been modified in this way, the power
supply (KL 15) of the entire vehicle electrical system is switched via the load-shedding relay. The original ignition
switch may have suffered initial damage and is to be replaced as well.
Note: The ignition switch has to be ordered separately.
