Squeaking noise from the area of the lower steering shaft or from the firewall boot.

Cause:
The guide tube detaches from the lower steering shaft (see video recording).
Remedy:
Replace lower steering shaft.
Procedure:
1. Put vehicle on lifting platform.
2. Turn steering wheel to straightahead position and secure to prevent it from turning.
3. Remove lower steering shaft.
4. Regrease boot of steering shaft before installing the new lower steering shaft (see parts list for grease).
5. Install new parts (see attachment) in the reverse order.
6. Check boot for correct seating (see "Correct installation position of boot").
Notes:
1. The attachment (parts overview) lists all the parts required for the repair.
- Order part 1 (bolt) as per EPC.
- Order part 5 (lower steering shaft) as per parts list.
2. If, on a problem vehicle of model 222 (up to ident number WDD222XXXA084533) the old version
of steering coupling (see attachment "Distinguishing features of steering coupling") is installed, then the
parts 2, 3, and 4 must also be replaced. Part A: Old version / Part B: New version.
