Complaint:
Knocking noises in the crank assembly of the engine at cold temperatures and in the warm-up phase. The intensity of
the noise decreases rapidly as the engine temperature rises.

Cause:
The knocking noise might be attributed to the unfavorable tolerance of the piston wrist pin resulting in enlarged piston
bushing - the end float of the connecting rod in the piston.
Remedy:
The repair requires the replacement of all connecting rods and pistons with wrist pins. Replace connecting rods bea-
ring as well.
To help in diagnosis please follow the steps outlined below.
Please submit PTSS case for engines with the symptom and outside of the validity range. Such cases will be consul-
ted with After-Sales Engineering Gasoline Engines GSP/TPP in Germany and they require the completed noise analy-
sis sheets included with the case - refer to attached information S101.10-P-0001A (SB01_10_34) and attached noise
analysis sheet - OF00.10-P-3000-03A.

When submitting the PTSS case provide results of following tests that must be performed with the engine cold (<
60°C):
- Do the knocking noises occur without a poly-V belt (influence of auxiliary equipment)?
- At which selector lever position (P, N, D) do the knocking noises occur?
- Do knocking noises occur at idle speed with no load or without electrical accessories?
- Switch on electrical accessories (lights, air conditioning) and assess whether the knocking noise stops or changes
- Slightly increase the idle speed (constant rpm) and load and assess whether the knocking noise stops or changes
- Switch off engine, unplug connector to switchable engine oil pump (on the timing case cover), restart engine and as-
sess whether the knocking noise stops or changes
- Assess noise at engine oil temperature >80°C (the typical noise caused by excessive end float of the piston pins is
barely audible at temperatures >80°C).
The repair in the case of enlarged piston pin end float necessitates the replacement of all connecting rods, pistons
and connecting rod bearing shells.
