Whistle or Whine Type Noise Coming from Front Windshield at Highway Speeds

Models:

2012 Chevrolet Cruze

Condition/Concern
Some customers may comment on a whistle or whine type noise coming from the front windshield area at highway
speeds. The noise is most prevalent at the top of the windshield on the passenger side. This condition is most
noticeable in ambient temperatures greater than 26°C (80°F).
This condition may be caused by the windshield lace (upper outer molding) vibrating against the roof panel.

Recommendation/Instructions
Use the following steps to diagnose and repair the condition.
1. Road test the vehicle and confirm the condition. The use of a mechanics stethoscope, with an open ended hose,
may help isolate the area of concern. Take along a roll of masking tape.

2. With the condition confirmed, apply tape along the top of the windshield upper outer molding (lace) as shown.
3. Road test the vehicle again to verify the noise has been eliminated with the tape in place.
4. Continue road testing the vehicle. Remove the tape in sections starting in the middle and working toward the
outside. Using this method, determine where the noise is originating.
5. With the area identified, mark the section that is causing the noise. Remove the masking tape.

6. Using a 3 mm (1/8 in.) tip opening, apply a bead of *3-M™ Super Silicone Sealant (Black) Part # 051135–08662
or the equivalent, between the lace and vehicle body as shown. Ensure the complete length of the affected area
is sealed.
7. Using light hand pressure, ensure the lace is bonded in place.
8. Using a general purpose adhesive remover, clean up any excess sealant.
9. After the sealant is cured, road test the vehicle to confirm the condition has been corrected.
