Information for Programming More Than 8 Keys

This PI has been revised to add Warranty Information. Please discard PI1208.

The Caprice PPV can be ordered with a fleet key option, RPO AU7. This option allows for an unlimited number of
keys to be programmed into the Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) module. Vehicles with this RPO arrive with 2 keys
already programmed to the vehicle and may have a package of 6 additional keys (RPO AMF) that are not
programmed. PI1195 provides details for programming the 6 additional keys to the vehicle.
This PI will explain how to program more than 8 keys to work with the vehicle.
Important: Make sure the vehicle is out of transport mode and ignition off for at least 15 seconds before trying to
program any keys.
All vehicles with Global A electrical systems can learn up to 8 key fobs. The PPV is different with the ability to learn
additional keys.
The Vehicle Theft Deterrent (VTD) and Remote Keyless Entry (RKE) components are located on the same circuit
board within the key. When a key is programmed to the vehicle, both VTD and RKE components are learned at the
same time.

Additional keys are available that do not contain the RKE circuits but when they are programmed to the vehicle, an
RKE memory position in the BCM is still used. After 8 keys are learned, all RKE memory positions are filled. To learn
additional keys, the fob memory in the BCM must be cleared.
When programming keys to this vehicle, program any keys without RKE functionality first. The last 8 keys to be
programmed should have RKE functionality if available.
Note: You must have all of the keys present that will be learned to the vehicle. This includes the original 2 keys that
were programmed to the vehicle and also the additional 6 keys that were ordered with the AMF option. Any fob
previously learned to the vehicle will be deleted during this procedure.
When more than 8 keys are needed and:
• Only 2 keys are currently learned to the vehicle, use the “Adding Keys” procedure listed in SI. Use non RKE
equipped keys for this procedure if available. Then proceed to step 1 below.
• 8 keys have already been learned, proceed directly to step 1.
Important: During programming, the battery voltage must be maintained within the proper range of 12-15.5 volts.
CONNECT the approved Midtronics® PSC 550 Battery Maintainer (SPS Programming Support Tool (EL-49642) to
the vehicle or the GR8 (EL50313) in the power supply mode.
1. Connect an MDI to the vehicle and to the Techline PC.
2. Ensure that all power consuming devices are turned OFF on the vehicle.
3. Select the SPS application and follow the on-screen instructions.

5. Select “Immobilizer Function” – “Immobilizer Learn” ” – “Normal” and then select “Next.”
6. Select the “Program Transponder or Remote Key” function then select “Next.”

7. After the timer counts down to zero, all stored RKE information is deleted. The previously learned VTD
information is retained during this process. Program 8 new keys following the on-screen instructions. Non RKE
equipped keys should be programmed first.
8. If additional keys need to be learned, return to step 5. This will clear all RKE memory again and allow another 8
keys to be learned.
9. Once all non RKE equipped keys have been learned, up to 8 keys with RKE functionality can be learned.
Important: Even though the VTD memory is retained, the RKE memory was cleared. If the keys with RKE
functionality are not relearned, the RKE functions will not work.
10. After programming, press the lock and unlock button on each RKE equipped key that was programmed to the
vehicle. This will awaken each key and allow RKE functions to be established.
11. With a GDS 2, clear any DTCs.
12. Verify each key is operating properly. Operate each of the RKE functions using the buttons on the key and then
use that key to start the vehicle.
Note: An unlimited amount of keys can be learned, but the BCM will only allow 8 RKE transmitters to be learned to
the vehicle. If more than 8 transmitters are learned, these keys will not be able to be learned to any other vehicle
again.
