1.0 – Introduction
Use the procedures in the following sections to initially configure a new VAS 6356 Test Instruments box for
use with a VAS diagnostic laptop or tablet with ODIS Service ONLY.
The ODIS Service diagnostic software installation routine automatically installs all VAS 6356 software
and USB driver files. VAS 6356 software installation via CD/DVD media is not necessary.
The configuration procedures extract the pre-installed USB driver and network adapter files and configures
a network connection. Successful configuration is confirmed with a connection test.
This document covers initial VAS 6356 configuration on VAS diagnostic laptop and tablet devices with
Windows® XP and Windows 7 operating systems.
Notes:
• Please read these instructions in their entirety before performing these procedures. If you do not
have previous experience loading software or do not understand these instructions,
arrange to have a qualified person perform the procedures.
• The following procedures must be performed by qualified personnel that are familiar with both
Windows XP and Windows 7 resources & navigation.
• The latest version of ODIS Service must be present or installed before proceeding with these
instructions.
• Communication between the VAS 6356 and laptop/tablet is via a USB/network connection.
• The following procedures must be performed on each laptop/tablet (with ODIS Service) where the

Service Information
2.1 – Preparation
Laptop & tablet Prerequisites:
• Device plugged in to power adapter (tablet in base station), booted to Windows desktop.
• Note installed Windows version during startup, Windows XP or Windows 7.
• The latest version of ODIS Service is installed.
• VAS-PC not installed or previously uninstalled.
VAS 6356 Prerequisites:
Physical set up completed as per initial unpacking and setup instructions, i.e.:

plugged in to power adapter, blue LEDs on steady
all test and measurement leads connected
USB cable connected.

2.2 – Procedure – Windows XP
2.2.1 – Extract USB Drivers
1. Connect VAS 6356 USB cable to any available USB port on the laptop/tablet. A Found New Hardware
Wizard window will appear.
2. Select No, not this time, then click Next:

3. Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced), then click Next:

4. Deselect Search removable media…, select Include this location in the search, then click Browse:

5. Expand ( + ) directory path Local Disk C: \ Program Files \ DiTEST \ VAS6356 and highlight the
USBDriver folder (as illustrated), then click OK:

9. From the Windows desktop > Start > (Settings) > Control Panel > System.
10. Select the Hardware tab, then click on Device Manager:

11. Expand ( + ) the Network adapters directory and confirm AVL DiTEST VAS 6356 is listed:

12. Close the Control Panel window.
2.2.2 – Configure Network Connection
1. Go to My Computer > Local Disk [C:] > Program Files > DiTEST > VAS 6356 > IPSetup
2. Click on VAS6356IPReg:

3. Click Set IP:

A very brief configuration takes place.
4. Close ( X ) the Set VAS6356 IP Window:

5. Briefly disconnect, and then reconnect the VAS 6356 USB cable from the laptop/tablet USB port.
6. Wait a moment, and then from the Windows desktop go to Start > (Settings) > Network Connections
7. Confirm the Local Area Connection for AVL DiTEST VAS6356 is present and connected. (If it is not
present and connected, repeat Steps 3 - 5). Highlight the connection and confirm the assigned IP
address is 192.168.111.110 (as illustrated):

2.3 – Procedure – Windows 7
2.3.1 – Extract USB Drivers
1. Connect VAS 6356 USB cable to any available USB port on the laptop/tablet.
Windows will detect and install the necessary drivers automatically. No user intervention is necessary.
2. From the desktop, click the Windows (Start) button:
3. Select Devices and Printers:
4. Verify that VAS6356 appears in the Devices (_) section:

Note:
VAS6356 appears in Devices and Printers only when connected via the USB cable.

5. Close the Devices and Printers window.
6. From the Windows desktop, click the Windows (Start) button:
7. Select Control Panel:
8. From the Control Panel menu, select System (scroll down if necessary).
9. From the submenu, select Device Manager:

10. Expand ( + ) the Network adapters directory and confirm that AVL DiTest VAS6356 is listed:

11. Close the Device Manager and Control Panel Windows
2.3.2 – Configure Network Connection
1. From the Windows desktop, click the Windows (Start) button:
2. Go to All Programs > DiTest > VAS 6356.
3. Right click (select) VAS 6356 – Konfiguration:

4. From the selection dropdown menu, select Run as Administrator.
A very brief IP configuration routine runs and the window closes automatically.
5. Briefly disconnect, and then reconnect the VAS 6356 USB cable from the laptop/tablet USB port.

6. Wait a moment, and then click the Windows (Start) button:

8. From the Control Panel menu, select Network and Sharing Center (scroll down if necessary).
9. From the submenu, select Change Adapter Settings.
10. Confirm that the Local Area Connection 2 for AVL DiTEST VAS6356 is present and is indicated as
connected as an unidentified network. (If it is not present and connected, repeat Steps 1 - 3):

11. Close the Network and Sharing window
Test the connection. Ref. Section 2.4 (below).

2.4 – Connection Test
1. From the Windows desktop, click the DiagStarter icon and select ODIS Service.
2. Select the Admin operating mode.
3. Select the Measurement tab.
4. In the GDI device driver category, confirm VAS6356 appears in the Measuring device selection:

6. Click the Self-test category.

The VAS 6356 is ready for use with the laptop/tablet.
