Subject: Causes for Slow Application Response and Lockups

1.0 – Description
Various hardware, Windows® software, and user issues may cause ODIS Service diagnostic sessions to
become slow or stop responding. Further user attempts to move forward or backward in a non-responsive
diagnostic session often results in diagnostic device “lockup”, and a device reboot is required.

2.0 – Causes
The ODIS Service and EDIC vehicle communication interface software on VAS diagnostic devices rely on
data exchange between the device and vehicle via the VAS 5054A Transmitter Head. ODIS Service
diagnostic functions must run various internal processes in a defined sequence in order to resolve the VIN
and other data necessary for the vehicle-specific diagnostic log. If these processes are not initiated and
maintained during the diagnostic session, or are otherwise interrupted due to device hardware, memory or
operating system issues, slow or intermittent application responses will result.
Further user input attempts during the interruption or corruption of the data stream could eventually exceed
device memory buffer limits and result in device lockup.

Improper Use of VAS
5054A Transmitter
Head

User disconnects VAS 5054A from vehicle
Data Link Connector (DLC) before finishing
diagnostic session. User then leaves
5054A disconnected or plugs it into a
different vehicle, and attempts to backtrack
the diagnostic session already in progress.

• Always complete diagnostic sessions
and exit the diagnostic function
completely before disconnecting 5054A
from vehicle. Always return to ODIS
Service Main/Start screen, or shut down
and restart ODIS Service before
connecting 5054A to a new vehicle
(recommended).
• If unable to complete a Guided Fault
Finding session, save the session, exit
the function and then disconnect the
5054A. Retrieve saved sessions for
completion later.

Accidental Disconnect

5054A accidentally dislodged from vehicle
Data Link Connector (DLC).

Ensure 5054A is properly seated in DLC
(confirm via blue LED on/flashing).

Out of Range or Signal
Impeded

VAS 5054A and device out of range from
one another during use, or integrated
windshield heaters affect Bluetooth signal.

Maintain a straight a line of sight (no walls
or barriers etc.) between 5054A and device
within radius of 30 feet (10 meters).

Vehicle Data Link
Connector (DLC) or
VAS 5054A
Malfunction

When properly seated in DLC, blue LED
on 5054A no longer lights.

• Confirm power and ground (B+ & GND)
supply to DLC, as well as continuity
between DLC and Diagnostic CAN-Bus
etc. Perform electrical troubleshooting
using wiring diagram.
• If DLC wiring is okay, the 5054A may be
malfunctioning. Contact Diagnostic
Tester Software Support (DTSS).

VAS 5054A Power Off
Time

The 5054A Power Off function is enabled
in the EDIC Configuration Manager.

Check Power Off setting. Refer to Service
Information document: VAS 5054A

WLAN and RF
Interference

Bluetooth communication between the
5054A and diagnostic device can be
adversely affected in dealerships using
WLAN - 802.11 (2.4 GHz), or were devices
using radio frequencies common to
microwave ovens, cordless phones,
remote controls for electronics or lighting
etc. are used.

Consult with your dealership IT

Operation Switch

Bluetooth (wireless) operation switch
accidently switched off during use.

on device startup and always running in
the background may affect device memory.

VAS 6150A Diagnostic Laptops: In
conjunction with the above, the existing
memory buffer may be insufficient during
long, complex diagnostic sessions and an
insufficient memory error is displayed.

Increase Windows paging file size. Refer

Unfavorable partitioning of the device hard
drive may have taken place during the
migration from Windows XP to Windows 7.
