Technical Background
Air filter change intervals are provided for vehicles that are
operated in normal conditions. Air filters in vehicles that are
driven in unusual conditions (such as on dusty roads or on race
circuits) can become dirty more quickly than air filters in
vehicles that are only driven in normal conditions.
Because the air intake is close to the ground (behind the front
wheel), excessive dirt can get into the intake air when the
vehicle is driven in unusual conditions. Excessive dirt (Figure 1)
can clog the air filter, which may cause illumination of the MIL,
misfiring, and fuel trim-related DTCs because:

• When the air filter is clogged, not enough intake air is
available to the engine, resulting in excessive vacuum in the
air duct hose between air filter and throttle valve (Figure 2).
The excessive vacuum can damage the air duct hose and
cause it to collapse and become deformed. Repeated
deformation of the hose causes it to crack.

• Bypass air gets in through the crack in the intake hose
(Figure 3) which can cause the MIL to become illuminated
and can cause fuel trim-related DTCs to be set.

Service
1. Check for cracks or damage on both of the intake air hoses.
2. If either hose is damaged, replace both hoses and both air cleaner elements.
