1.0 – Introduction
Three software installation options are available for initial setup of new VAS 6356 Test Instruments Box.
These options depend on the existing or planned diagnostic software installations on the connected
VAS diagnostic laptop and tablet devices.
Please review the software installation options and Notes below. Choose the appropriate installation
option based on how the diagnostic devices currently are, or will be deployed.

Option 1 - ODIS Service & VAS-PC
Summary: VAS 6356 software was pre-installed along with ODIS Service. Do Not use the VAS 6356
installation CD on devices with existing ODIS Service installations – Ref. Section 2.0 (Page 2)

Option 2 - ODIS Service Only
Summary: VAS 6356 software was pre-installed along with ODIS Service. Do not use the VAS 6356
installation CD on devices with existing ODIS Service installations – Ref. Section 2.0 (Page 2)

Option 3 - VAS-PC Only
Summary: Use the VAS 6356 software installation CD – Ref. Section 3.0 (Page 8)
Notes:
 These instructions are intended for qualified personnel only! Please read and understand all
information in its entirety before performing any instruction steps!
 Full test instrument functionality (volt, ohm, current, diode test and DSO) in manual and automatic
GFF integration modes are only possible in ODIS Service.
 In Options 1 and 3, automatic GFF measurement value integration with VAS-PC GFF test plans is
limited to multimeter functions only. The DSO function is not available in VAS-PC!
 If a VAS 6356 is set up for use on a VAS-PC only device, and the device is upgraded with ODIS
Service in future, the VAS 6356 software/drivers and ODIS AMT software must be uninstalled
prior to installing ODIS Service. For details, refer to Service Information – ODIS Service

2.0 – ODIS Service & VAS-PC / ODIS Service Only
2.1 – General Information
The installation of ODIS Service diagnostic software includes installation of VAS 6356 software files. As a
result, DO NOT use the software installation CD included with the VAS 6356 shipment on devices where
ODIS Service is already installed. This avoids a potential software compatibility issue.
All that is required on devices where ODIS Service is already installed is to extract the pre-installed VAS
6356 USB driver and network adapter files, perform a brief configuration and test the system connection as
per the following instructions.
The latest version of ODIS Service must be present or installed before proceeding with these instructions.
Notes:
 Communication between the VAS 6356 and laptop/tablet takes place via a network connection.
 The following procedures enable integrated GFF multimeter (only) functions on VAS-PC.
 The following procedures must be performed on each laptop/tablet (with ODIS Service) where the
VAS 6356 will be connected.

2.2 – Extract USB Driver and Network Adapter Files
Laptop/tablet Prerequisites:
 Plugged in to power adapter (tablet in base station), booted to Windows® desktop.
 ODIS Service Version 1.2.0 or higher installed.
VAS 6356 Prerequisites:
Physical set up completed as per initial unpacking and setup instructions, i.e.:




plugged in to power adapter, blue LEDs on steady
all test and measurement leads connected
USB cable connected.

1. Connect VAS 6356 USB cable to any available USB port on the laptop/tablet. A Found New Hardware
Wizard window will appear.
2. Select No, not this time, then click Next:

Service Information
3. Select Install from a list or specific location (Advanced), then click Next:

4. Deselect Search removable media…, select Include this location in the search, then click Browse:

5. Expand ( + ) directory path Local Disk C: \ Program Files \ DiTEST \ VAS6356 and highlight the
USBDriver folder (as illustrated), then click OK:

6. Confirm the path specified in Step 5 appears, then click Next:

7. Select Continue Anyway, to retrieve the files:

9. From the Windows desktop > Start > (Settings) > Control Panel > System.
10. Select the Hardware tab, then click on Device Manager:

11. Expand ( + ) the Network adapters directory and confirm AVL DiTEST VAS 6356 is listed:

12. Close the Control Panel window.

2.3 – Configure Network Connection and Test System
1. Go to My Computer > Local Disk [C:] > Program Files > DiTEST > VAS 6356 > IPSetup
2. Click on VAS6356IPReg:

3. Click Set IP:

A very brief configuration takes place.
4. Close ( X ) the Set VAS6356 IP Window:

5. Briefly disconnect, and then reconnect the VAS 6356 USB cable from the laptop/tablet USB port.
6. Wait a moment, and then from the Windows desktop go to Start > (Settings) > Network Connections
7. Confirm the Local Area Connection for AVL DiTEST VAS6356 is present and connected. (If it is not
present and connected, repeat Step 3). Highlight the connection and confirm the assigned IP address
is 192.168.111.110 (as illustrated):

8. Close the Network Connections Window.
9. From the Windows desktop, click the DiagStarter icon and select ODIS Service.

10. Select the Admin operating mode and the Measurement tab.
11. In the GDI device driver category, confirm VAS6356 appears in the Measuring device selection:

12. Select the Measuring technology tab, and then click on the Self-test category.
13. Click the Measurement button:

Service Information
The VAS 6356 is ready for use with the laptop/tablet.
ATTENTION:

Please heed the VAS 6356 use restrictions with VAS-PC specified in the Notes on Page 1,
and inform all service personnel accordingly.

3.0 – VAS-PC Only
Existing diagnostic laptop and tablet devices running VAS-PC only (ODIS Service not installed) do not
have VAS 6356 software pre-installed.
On VAS-PC only devices, install the VAS 6356 software, USB driver and ODIS AMT software using the
CD supplied with the VAS 6356 shipment. Follow the software CD installation instructions included with the
VAS 6356 shipment.
Note:
If a VAS 6356 is set up for use on a VAS-PC only device, and the device is upgraded with ODIS
Service in future, the VAS 6356 software/drivers and ODIS AMT software must be uninstalled prior
to installing ODIS Service. For details, refer to Service Information – ODIS Service document title:
