Complaint:
Fault profile 1/2: The display of the COMAND unit (A40/3) shows the message "Theft protection active".
Fault profile 3: Initial startup of the COMAND unit (A40/3) cannot be performed with DAS/Xentry Diagnostics or is aborted prematurely.
Fault profile 4/5: Initial startup of the COMAND unit (A40/3) cannot be performed with DAS/Xentry Diagnostics or is
aborted prematurely because CAN communication for the COMAND unit (A40/3) is disrupted . Sometimes the message "Theft protection active" appears on the display.
Fault profile 6.: Redocumentation of the radio serial number and PIN in the VeDoc system was not performed .

Cause:
Ca . 1: The COMAND (A40/3) is in the "as-delivered state". In DAS/Xentry Diagnostics go to Actual values/Theft protection and check the status of the COMAND (A40/3). Initial startup of the COMAND (A40/3) with DAS/Xentry Diagnostics was not performed during the last installation . The PIN is still stored in the COMAND (A40/3). The COMAND
(A40/3) locks after approx. 50 to 255 activation sequences.
Ca. 2: The COMAND (A40/3) is in the "as-delivered state". Initial startup was performed approx. 2-4 weeks ago and
the PIN has already been redocumented in VeDoc. However, the initial startup was not completed properly due to a
procedural error in DAS/Xentry Diagnostics.
Ca. 3: The COMAND (A40/3) is in the "as-delivered state" and is new from the warehouse. Initial startup cannot be
performed with DAS/Xentry Diagnostics because the PIN cannot be read from the COMAND (A40/3). During initial
startup, the PIN was erased with DAS/Xentry Diagnostics too early to allow initial startup to be completed successfully.
Ca. 4: In model series 164 and 251 the EZS control unit (N73) A164 545 15 08 or A164 545 16 08 is installed. The
EZS control unit (N73) and the COMAND (A40/3) are not compatible with the "Theft protection" function .

Ca . S: The COMAND (A40/3) is in the "CAN signal disrupted" state. The fault code DAOO is stored in the fault memory
of the COMAND (A40/3). Initial startup is not possible because there is a CAN fault. CAN communication to the EZS
control unit (N73) is disrupted or faulty.
Ca . 6: Initial startup of the COMAND unit (A40/3) was not performed with a valid licensed DAS/Xentry Diagnostics system!!!

Remedy:
Re. 1: Perform initial startup of the COMAND (A40/3) with DAS/Xentry Diagnostics.
Re . 2: Perform another initial startup of the COMAND (A40/3) with DAS/Xentry Diagnostics.
Re. 3: Report the case to your market coordinator with a control unit log of the telematics control unit. They may be
able to determine the PIN again. When the PIN has been determined, perform initial startup of the COMAND (A40/3)
with DAS/Xentry Diagnostics.
Re. 4 : Replace the EZS (N73). To do this, determine the part number in the EPC system. Perform initial startup of the
EZS (N73) and transfer the chassis number to the EZS (N73). Be sure to use the correct upper and lower case letters.
Perform another initial startup of the COMAND (A40/3) with DAS/Xentry Diagnostics.
Re. Sa: Check whether the chassis number has been transferred correctly in the EZS (N73) . This can be checked
with DAS/Xentry Diagnostics in the EZS control unit (N73) under Actual values I Drive authorization. To enter the correct chassis number in the EZS control unit (N73) , use DAS/Xentry Diagnostics to access the menu "EZS I Control
unit adaptations I Write VIN", enter the correct chassis number and save this entry with FS. Note: The chassis number displayed here for the vehicle is determined from the engine control unit during the diagnosis procedure. Perform
a "MQST ring restart" in the COMAND (A40/3) with DAS/Xentry Diagnostics. The menu item "Restart optical ring" can
be found in DAS/Xentry Diagnostics under Audio, Video, Navigation and Telematics. Erase the stored fault in the COMAND (A40/3). Perform initial startup of the COMAND (A40/3) with DAS/Xentry Diagnostics.
Re. Sb: Check whether CAN communication is functioning correctly at the COMAND (A40/3). Perform a quick test to
check other control units for CAN faults and process these faults completely. Then perform initial startup of the COMAND (A40/3) with DAS/Xentry Diagnostics.
Re . Sc: If the fault code DAOO is current and stored in EZS control unit (N73) and there are no other CAN faults stored in other control units, Please be sure the EZS control unit (N73) contains the correct chassis number. If the chassis number is correct, please perform a trace of CAN-B as described in the attachment. Attach the CAN trace to the
PTSS case.
Re . 6: Perform another initial startup of the COMAND (A40/3) with DAS/Xentry Diagnostics using a valid licensed system .
Note:
When a COMAND APS (A40/3) with PIN theft protection is installed in a vehicle, the PIN code is automatically redocumented in the VeDoc system (online) as of DAS version 11/09. After successful initial startup, please check whether the PIN has been redocumented correctly in the VeDoc system.
