Complaint:

The CO MAND control unit (A40/3) exhibits one or more of the following problems:

• The COMAND control unit (A40/3) starts, can be operated and then switches itself off again. This procedure can be

repeated continuously (cyclical reset). The period of time in which the COMAND control unit (A40/3) performs this cyclical reset can vary from just a few seconds to several minutes.

• The COMAND control unit (A40/3) cannot be operated using the buttons or via the Audio/COMAND control panel

(A40/9). Audio may also no longer be available.

• During operation, the Audio/COMAND display control unit {A40/8) switches itself off and then on again. This procedure can be repeated continuously.

• No communication can be set up between Xentry Diagnostics and the COMAND control unit (A40/3). The COMAND

control unit (A40/3) does not appear in the quick test of Xentry Diagnostics.

Note: These complaints occur mostly with media connected/inserted (e.g. CD, DVD, USB, SD card, mobile phone,

iPod or iPad).
Cause:

When media (CD, DVD, USB, SD card, mobile phone, iPod or iPad) are used with the COMAND control unit (A40/3),

the cause is an implausible music database.
Remedy:

Do not replace the COMAND control unit (A40/3). Update the software of the COMAND control unit (A40/3) and reset

the customer-specific data at the COMAND {A40/3).

Note: All steps must be completed in the listed order! If a step is skipped the issue WILL NOT be resolved and the

claim may be subject to a warranty debit.

1. Method 1: EjecUdisconnect all media (CD, DVD, USB, SD card, mobile phone, iPod or iPad). If the COMAND control unit (A40/3) performs a cyclical reset, the COMAND control unit (A40/3) can be operated for a brief moment after

the reset. In this moment the "Eject" button should be pressed in order to eject the CDs/DVDs in the drive. (see attachment: Disc Ejecting Guide)

Method 2: Eject/disconnect all media (CD, DVD, USB, SD card, mobile phone, iPod or iPad). If the COMAND control unit (A40/3) performs a cyclical reset, the COMAND control unit (A40/3) can be operated for a brief moment after

the reset. Enter "Dealer Mode" by pressing "End Call" + "7" + "9" and select item "6" - Emergency Eject.

The resets no longer occur when the CDs/DVDs have been removed.

2. Export the customer-specific data from the COMAND control unit (A40/3) to an SD card/USB stick (for instructions,

see the attachment "Storing customer-specific data", section A).

Note: An SD card or a USB stick is required to make a backup of all customer-specific data such as navigation destinations, address book entries, etc..

3. Reset the customer-specific data in the COMAND control unit (A40/3) via the "System" menu, sub-menu "Settings"

- If this step is skipped the issue WILL continue to occur! (for further instructions, see the attachment "Deleting customer-specific data", section B).

•This will clear the implausible track database

• Important: all the customer's data, such as navigation destinations, address book entries etc. will be lost

4. Update the COMAND software to SW release 11137.02 or higher using Xentry Diagnostics. This COMAND software is available with Telematics CD 11/2011 (A 172 827 40 59) or later.

5. Import the backed-up customer data from the SD card/USB stick back to the COMAND (for instructions, see the attachment "Loading customer-specific data" section C)
