Safety Recall: Rear Brake Pipe Wear

CONDITION SUMMARY:
Situation: A concern has been identified with a small number of 2013-2014 model year Jaguar XF (XFR-S only)
vehicles. During accelerated durability testing of the Jaguar Sportbrake XFR-S model, routine inspection of the
vehicle identified that the rear right-hand brake pipe displayed evidence of a dynamic foul condition with the rear
brake pipe contacting a redundant bracket on the rear subframe. This foul condition caused a flat to wear on the
brake pipe. Engineering assessment of this condition concluded that if the brake pipe remained in this position
the brake pipe would wear through and cause sudden loss of brake fluid. A vehicle exhibiting sudden loss of
brake fluid will illuminate a red 'BRAKE' (USA) or a red 'exclamation' (!) mark in a circle (Canada) telltale warning
in the Instrument Cluster while displaying the words ‘low brake fluid’, instructing the driver to seek qualified
assistance. Loss of fluid will also result in failure of one of the diagonal braking circuits, and while braking
capability will be retained by the other diagonal braking circuit, pedal feel and travel will be adversely affected
and stopping distances will increase. Loss of one braking circuit could compromise vehicle stability and
significantly increase the risk of an accident.
Action: Retailers are required to HOLD all affected vehicles that are within your control and refrain from
releasing the vehicles for new or used vehicle sale pending completion of the rework action detailed in this
Technical Bulletin. Unsold vehicles should have this performed as part of the Pre-Delivery Inspection (PDI)
process but must have it completed prior to vehicle handover to the customer. Affected vehicles already in the
hands of customers should be updated at the next available opportunity.

table. The SRO and part information listed have been included for information only. The Option Code(s) that allows
for the drive in / drive out allowance may only be claimed if the vehicle is brought into the workshop for this action
alone to be undertaken.
Warranty claims must be submitted for payment within 30 calendar days of completion of the repair.

SERVICE INSTRUCTION:

NOTE: Illustrations may show parts removed for clarity.

1. Remove the rear wheels and tires (see TOPIx Workshop Manual, section: 204-04).

2. Check to see if there is any damage to the brake
pipe, in the area where it can come into contact
with the redundant bracket.

3. Check to see if there is a 20mm gap between the
redundant bracket and the brake pipe.
If required, use a suitable tool to reposition

the redundant bracket on the rear subframe so
there is a 20mm gap between the bracket and
the brake pipe.

NOTE: If there is any damage to the left-hand or right-hand brake pipe, both brake pipes
must be replaced.
Carry out steps 2-3 to the opposite side.
If there is no damage to both brake pipes, install the rear wheels and tires (see TOPIx Workshop Manual,

section: 204-04) and release the vehicle.
If there is any damage to the left-hand or right-hand brake pipe, continue to the next step.

5. Remove the fuel tank (see TOPIx Workshop Manual, section: 310-01).

Steps 6-9: Replace rear left-hand brake pipe

WARNING: EYE CONTACT: Brake fluid contains polyglycol ethers and polyglycols. Avoid contact with
the eyes. Wash hands thoroughly after handling. If brake fluid comes into contact with the eyes, flush
the eyes with plenty of cold running water for 15 minutes. Seek medical attention for any persistent eye
irritation or abnormality.

WARNING: SWALLOWED: Brake fluid contains polyglycol ethers and polyglycols. If swallowed, drink
plenty of water. Seek immediate medical attention.

WARNING: INHALED: Dust from friction materials can be harmful if inhaled.

WARNING: Only use new specified brake fluid from airtight containers.

CAUTION: If brake fluid is spilled on the paintwork, the affected area must be immediately washed
down with cold water.

CAUTION: Make sure that all openings are sealed. Use new blanking caps.

NOTE: Make sure a suitable container is positioned below the brake pipe(s), to catch any escaping
brake fluid.

6. Disconnect the brake pipe.

7. Disconnect the brake pipe.

8. Release the brackets and remove and discard the
brake pipe.

9. Install the new brake pipe:
Reverse steps 6-8 to install the new brake pipe.

Steps 10-13: Replace rear right-hand brake pipe

10. Disconnect the brake pipe.

11. Disconnect the brake pipe.

12. Release the brackets and remove and discard
the brake pipe.

13. Install the new brake pipe:
Reverse steps 10-12 to install the new brake pipe.

14. Install the fuel tank (see TOPIx Workshop Manual, section: 310-01).

15. Bleed the brake hydraulic system (see TOPIx Workshop Manual, section: 206-00).
