CONDITION SUMMARY:
Situation: A concern has been identified on a number of XF, XJ, and XK vehicles within the listed VIN ranges
where the residual torque on the steering gear pinion bolt could be below the lower specification and in some
cases the customer may experience a knocking noise from the steering gear. The latter will only be the case if
the early steering degradation is ignored by the customer.
Action: Retailers are required to before sale HOLD all affected vehicles in the above VIN range that are in
their control and refrain from releasing the vehicles for new or used vehicle sale pending completion of the
rework action detailed in this Technical Bulletin. Affected vehicles in the hands of owners must be repaired at
the next available opportunity.

Check DDW to ensure that the vehicle is affected by this program prior to undertaking any rework action. At
the time of confirming a booking for vehicle repair, ensure that all outstanding Service Actions are identified to
ensure the correct parts are available and adequate workshop time is allocated for repairs to be completed at
one visit.
Warranty claims must be submitted quoting Program Code 'K161' together with the relevant Option Code from
the table. The SRO and part information listed have been included for information only. The Option Code(s)
that allows for the drive in / drive out allowance can only be claimed if the vehicle is brought back into the
workshop for this action alone to be undertaken.
This program is valid for a limited time only. Warranty claims with a repair date prior to the 31 January 2015
closure date must be submitted for payment within 30 calendar days of completion of the repair.

REPAIR PROCEDURE
Warning: Do not work on or under a vehicle
supported only by a jack. Always support the
vehicle on safety stands.
1. Refer to Workshop Manual section 501-02 and
remove the air deflector.
Caution: Do not release the power steering pipe unless
required.
Caution: Do not use excessive force if re-positioning of
the power steering pipe is required.
Caution: Only loosen the Torx bolt far enough to allow
the required movement of the power steering pipe. Do
not allow the power steering pipe to be released far
enough to result in fluid loss.
Caution: Note the installed position of the power
steering pipe before releasing the Torx bolt.
2. Remove the steering gear upper bolt.





If required, loosen the Torx bolt.
If required, carefully reposition the power steering pipe.
Remove the bolt.

3. Position the new washer over the hole.

4. Install the bolt.
• Tighten the bolt to 115 Nm.
• If required, re-position the power steering pipe to the
original position and tighten the Torx bolt to 20 Nm.

5. Refer to Workshop Manual section 501-02 and
install the air deflector.
6. Lower the vehicle.
