Introduction
Some 2012 - 2013 model year Prius V vehicles may exhibit a rear brake groan or squeak noise
when going forward or backing up when the brakes are cold. New Rear Brake Caliper Assemblies
that include anti-squeal shims, brake pads, and pad support clips have been developed to address
this condition.

• This repair is covered under the Toyota Basic Warranty. This warranty is in effect for 36 months
or 36,000 miles, whichever occurs first, from the vehicle's in-service date.
• Warranty application is limited to occurrence of the specified condition described in this
bulletin.

Repair Procedure

1. Conduct a road test to verify the rear brakes groan or squeak.
NOTE
The condition usually occurs when the brakes are cold and damp.

2. Remove rear brake caliper assembly.
Refer to the Technical Information System (TIS), applicable model and model year Repair
Manual:
• 2012 I 2013 Prius V:

Repair Procedure (Continued)

3. Measure the disc thickness, using a micrometer.

• Standard thickness: 12.0 mm (0.472 in.)
• Minimum thickness: 10.5 mm (0.413 in.)
NOTE
If the disc thickness is less than the minimum, replace the disc.

4. If discs are within the standard thickness, grind both rear discs using an on-car lathe.
Runout specification upon completion: 0.15 mm (0.00591 in.)
NOTE
Even if discs are within runout specification (0.15 mm [0.00591 in.]), disc grinding is part of
required repair procedure if discs are NOT replaced.

5. Install NEW rear brake caliper assembly.
Refer to TIS, applicable model and model year Repair Manual:
• 2012 I 2013 Prius V:
Brake - Brake (Rear) - "Brake (Rear): Rear Brake: Installation"
6. Conduct a test drive and confirm condition is no longer present.
