Install Trailer Hitch

This Customer 1 Action has been initiated because the trailer hitch may not have been installed on affected
vehicles due to a sales code ordering error. Please check the vehicle and install the trailer hitch per the
below instructions.

Prior to performing this Customer 1 Action:
Please check VMI to insure the vehicle is involved and to determine if the vehicle has been
previously repaired.

Procedure
1.

Remove step plate:

Note:
Only with code W73: Rear end door step.
•

Unscrew bolts from the underfloor and
remove step.

•

Detach step plate trim strip.

Note:
Do not reinstall step plate.
2.

If equipped with tow bracket (A, Figure 1):
Remove 3 nuts (arrows, Figure 1) and bolts
then remove tow bracket (A).
Note:
Do not reinstall tow bracket (A, Figure 1).

Clean contact surfaces on left and right
longitudinal members

Loosely attach trailer hitch (1, Figure 2 and
Figure 3) to the right and left longitudinal
member using 4 (M10x90) bolts (3, Figure 2),
backing plates (2, Figure 2 and Figure 3) and
4 nuts (4, Figure 2 and Figure 3).

5.

Align trailer hitch (1, Figure 2 and Figure 3).

6.

Torque all nuts (4, Figures 2 and Figure 3) to
90Nm.

7.

Route trailer hitch harness connector (arrow,
Figure 4) in from back of socket plate (1)
then out through front of plate (1).

Secure socket plate (1, Figure 5) to trailer hitch (2) using bolts (3). Torque bolts (3) to 10 Nm (+/-1 Nm).
Note:
Threaded bolt shank (4) will protrude through fastener on trailer hitch plate.

Install trailer hitch socket connector (2, Figure 6):
Connect wiring harness connector (1, Figure 6) to trailer hitch socket connector (2), secure connection
with lock (3).
Secure socket connector (2) to socket plate (4) with screws (arrows); torque screws (arrows) to:
3 Nm +/- 0.4 Nm.

•

Route wiring harness (5) under trailer hitch (6) and secure to trailer hitch with cable ties (7).

10. Perform quick test and verify that trailer hitch is present.
