Equipped with 2.0L or 2.5L Engine (RPOs LCV (Code A), LKW (Code L) or LTG
(Code X))
Attention: This PI also applies to any of the above models that may be Export vehicles.
This PI has been revised to update the Warranty Information to add an RPO to Malibu.
Please discard PI1407.
Condition/Concern
Some customers may comment about a loud whine noise coming from the engine. The frequency of the noise
increases and decreases with the engine RPM.
Recommendation/Instructions
Remove the accessory drive belt to eliminate as a possible noise source. Verify the whine noise is coming from the
lower end of the engine. Verify the pitch of the whine noise increases when increasing engine speed.
If noise source is determined to be internal of the engine, remove the oil pan and inspect for broken main bearing
cap bolts. Extract the broken portion of the bolt from the engine block after removing the lower block half.
Undamaged lower crank case bolts must be replaced as well. They are a one time use bolt.
The balance shaft should also be replaced due to damage to the teeth where the bolt head was contacting the gear
and producing the whine noise. Refer to Balancer Shaft with Oil Pump Removal in SI.
