Certain 2015 Model Year Conventional Trucks with hydraulic brakes

IMPORTANT:
Verify the vehicle requires the work to be performed by referencing the vehicle by VIN within the Hino
Warranty System (DCS).
CONDITION:
A parking brake lever with a one-way damper may not return fully to the “at rest” position unless the driver
fully lowers the lever, depending on the adjustment of the parking brake cable, enabling the switch to be fully
depressed. The following procedure provides instruction for the replacement of the one-way damper of the
parking brake lever with a two-way damper to ensure full return to the “at rest” position without driver input.
SUBJECT VEHICLES:
Certain 2015 Model Year Conventional trucks with hydraulic brakes that were assembled at the Williamstown,
WV plant.
NOTICE: Refer to the appropriate Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) list to determine vehicle eligibility.
BEFORE YOU BEGIN:
- Read and understand all instructions and procedures before you begin the work.
- Read and follow all WARNINGS and NOTICES set forth in this publication. These alerts help to avoid damage
to components, serious personal injury, or both.
- Park the vehicle on a level and solid surface and apply the parking brake.
- Confirm the starter switch is in the off (LOCK) position, and the key is removed.
- Wear safety glasses to prevent eye injuries.
- Place wheel chocks in front of and behind all wheels.

VEHICLE PREPARATION:

1. Park the vehicle on level ground.

2. Confirm the engine is stopped, the
ignition switch is in the off (LOCK) position,
and the key is removed.

3. Apply the parking brake.

4. Chock all of the wheels.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:

1. Remove the 2 screws securing the
parking brake lever assembly cover and
then remove the cover. Retain these parts
for reassembly.

2. With the parking brake lever in the
released position, carefully remove the
clips retaining the pins that connect the
damper to the lever assembly. Refer to the
photograph to the right for reference.
Note that the lever is removed from the
vehicle for clarity.

3. Remove the pins from the lever, noting
the assembly order of the rubber washers
on the lower pin on either side of the
damper rod. Remove and discard the old
oil filled damper. Retain the mounting
hardware for reassembly.

4. Install the new damper (87319-E0010)
in the reverse order of installation. The
damper can only be installed in one
direction due to pin diameter. Ensure the
rubber washers are installed in the correct
order on the lower pin.

5. Ensure the retaining clips are reinstalled
and properly seated on both damper pins.
Verify that the parking brake lever releases
completely.

6. Remove the screw and the nut for the
parking brake lever handle and then
remove the handle by pushing the handle
toward the front of the vehicle.

7. Using the adjustment knob on the
lever, set the pin height to the specified
value. It will be necessary to release the
lever to rotate the adjustment knob and
then re-apply the lever to measure. Refer
to the photograph to the right for
measurement location. Final adjustment
will be made later.

Standard Pin Height: 65±2mm

8. Proceed to Parking Brake Cable
Adjustment.
PARKING BRAKE CABLE ADJUSTMENT:

1. Use a pull force gauge 20mm from the
end of the lever to measure the maximum
force required to apply the parking brake
lever. Refer to the standard value. If
adjustment is required, continue to step 2.
If the pull force is within specification, skip
to step 3.
Standard Value: 257N ±24.5N
NOTICE: For minor adjustments, the lever
knob can be used as long as pin height is
within 65mm ±2mm

2. Use the cable turnbuckle located inside
the driver side frame rail to adjust lever
pull force. Tighten the jam nut to specified
torque when complete. Confirm that the
exposed threads on the No.2 parking
brake cable is less than 69mm after
adjustment is complete. The photo to the
right shows 19mm of exposed threads.
Specified Torque: 20 lb-ft (27 Nm)

3. Ensure the retaining clips are
reinstalled and properly seated on both
damper pins. Verify that the parking brake
lever releases completely. Replace the
parking brake lever assembly cover and
reinstall the retaining screws. Tighten to
the specified torque.
Specified Torque: 1.5 lb-ft (2.0 Nm)

4. Slide the parking brake lever handle over the lever. Reinstall the retaining screw and tighten to the specified
torque.
Specified Torque: 1.1 lb-ft (1.5 Nm)

5. Proceed to Final Inspection.

FINAL INSPECTION:
1. To complete this campaign procedure, review the campaign and confirm the following:
 The parking brake lever pull force is within specification.
 The parking brake cable turnbuckle locknut is torqued to specification.
 All components that were removed and/or replaced have been properly installed and fasteners
torqued to their specification.
 The parking brake lamp works correctly with the parking brake lever in the applied and unapplied
positions.
