Aftermarket Injector Strategy

Effective September 15, 2014, two aftermarket strategies have been developed to improve
injector repairs. Based on vehicle data and repair history, Technicians will be directed to
follow the appropriate repair strategy.
E3.4 Strategy – Verify Build Date & Contact Parts Services
Technicians are to first connect Premium Tech Tool (PTT) and check for diagnostic trouble
codes (DTC) in situations where:

Injector DTC are present, or
NO injector DTC are present and the vehicle is exhibiting classic symptoms of injector
failure (hard start, miss under load, high speed flutter, etc.)
Technicians must manually verify the vehicle build date before proceeding with diagnostics.
Verify the vehicle build date by inspecting the labels in the driver’s door jamb.

If the vehicle build date falls within the date range below, Technicians must call Parts Services
at 866-538-6586 for further instructions.

If the vehicle build date is outside of the range listed or previously updated with the E3.5
injectors, perform E3.5 Strategy – Perform Extensive Diagnostics.
During the call to Parts Services, Technicians will be asked to provide the following
information:
•

VIN number
Technician identification number
Repairing dealer identification number
Parts Services has visibility to vehicle repair history and application type. If the vehicle is
eligible, Parts Services will release a parts kit including six E3.5 injectors, six sleeves, six Orings, six hold down bolts, and graphite paste to perform the repair.
Vehicles that were updated with (6) E3.5 injectors during a previous repair will be treated as
E3.5 builds and Technicians will be instructed to follow the E3.5 strategy.
Vocational Trucks
Parts Services will also release a Stanchion-Mount Fuel Tank Filter Kit (part number
21882780) for installation with the new injectors for Vocational vehicles with non-vented fuel
tank caps only. The tank filter kit is required to prevent contaminants from entering the fuel
system and damaging the new injectors in harsh environments.
Note: Parts Services will provide instructions for filing Warranty claims and making these
repairs if applicable warranty coverage applies.
Note: Contacting Tech Support is not required at any time during E3.4 injector diagnostics.
E3.5 Strategy – Perform Extensive Diagnostics
For vehicles built with 11L and 16L engines after January 2014 and vehicles built with 13L
engines after May 2013, Technicians are to:
1 Use PTT symptom based diagnostics to perform all available procedures to determine root
cause of the failure.
2 Perform all VCADS function tests and operations as directed.
3 If symptoms suggest or if combustion gas leakage is suspected, perform the improved Airin-Fuel System Check. Refer to service bulletin 230-256.
4 If diagnostics reveal that replacement injectors are needed, Technicians must call Parts
Services at 866-538-6586 for parts and claim filing instructions.
Note: The training video for the Air-in-Fuel System Check must be viewed on LMS prior to
performing the procedure.

Reimbursement Instructions
This repair may be eligible for reimbursement if a product failure was experienced within the
time and mileage limits of the applicable warranty coverage. Reimbursement is obtained via
the normal claim handling process.
Please create warranty claims with the following information:
1 The correct causal part number—the part number of the failed/removed part
2 All active and inactive fault codes must be referenced in the claim text
