SITUATION 1

A Delivery Stop has been issued on certain 2014 model year F15 and F3x vehicles produced from July 2013 to
January 2014 because the final drive differential gears may not have been properly hardened.
Vehicles held at the ports of entry are being inspected and/or repaired prior to center delivery. During
this inspection and analysis of data, BMW of North America has documented a failure rate of less than one
in two hundred.
The affected vehicles are listed in the attachment to this bulletin; they are also identified with a “Vehicle
Comment” in the DCSnet Warranty Vehicle Inquiry or ISPA as follows:


The initial limited available stock of parts is reserved for vehicles that have already been sold and are in
customers’ hands (see Situation 2). Affected vehicles in center inventory must not be retailed or delivered until
the rear differential has been replaced.
SITUATION 2

Certain 2014 model year F15 and F3x vehicles produced from July 2013 to January 2014 may have final drive
differential gears that have not been properly hardened. These vehicles have already been sold and delivered to
customers.
AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Delivery Stop/Service Action involves F15 and F3x Models produced July 2013 to January 2014
First check if a Service Action label with a code number 671 is already attached to the B-pillar.

If a code number 671 has been punched out, the Campaign has already been performed and no further action is
necessary.
Vehicles which require this Service Action to be completed will show it as “Open” when checked either in the
"Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or with the Key Reader.
PROCEDURE 1 (DELIVERY STOP, NEW VEHICLES IN-STOCK)

Replace the rear differential (Refer to Repair Instruction RA 33 10 016). The initial limited available stock of parts
is for vehicles that have already been sold and are in customers’ hands.
PROCEDURE 2 (CUSTOMER’S VEHICLES)

A certain number of miles need to accumulate before the gears show signs of wear (for example, the 310 mile
threshold).
If the vehicle has 310 miles or less:


Replace the rear differential (Refer to Repair Instruction RA 33 10 016).

If the vehicle has more than 310 miles:


The gear oil in the rear differential needs to be checked first for metallic debris/shavings

Some vehicles may need the tension
struts removed to access to the fill
plug. Remove bolts (1) and (2) to
remove the tension struts (3).
Tightening torque for M10x20 bolts:
50 Nm.
Tightening torque for M12x35 bolts:
100 Nm.

Remove the oil fill plug from the rear
differential and insert a magnet into
the fill hole (1).

The magnet needs to reach the bottom
of the inside of the diff to accurately
inspect for debris (1). *Rear
differential cover was removed for
clarity. Do Not remove the rear
differential cover.

If there is no debris (1) on the magnet,
the differential does not need to be
replaced. (A small amount of metallic
flakes may be on the magnet. This is
considered normal wear of the
differential.)
Note: Check and top the rear
differential oil after checking the
differential. Replace with a new fill
plug, P/N 33 11 7 525 064.

If the magnet is covered in metallic
debris/shavings (1), the differential
will need to be replaced. If there is no
debris, the differential does not need to
be replaced.

Note: Performing a part number look-up in ETK (EPC) by VIN or model will result in the wrong rear axle
drive part number being invoiced and installed.

Plug P/N 33 11 7 525 064 is not blocked from ordering, and should only be ordered as needed. All other parts are

procedure outlined below:
All requests must be emailed to [email protected]. The email must contain the following information or the
orders request will be cancelled:
Subject line – Rear Axle Differential
Center number and location code where the part should be delivered
Contact Information – Name, phone number
VIN – Last seven (7) digits
Stock on these parts is limited. Orders will be placed into the system between 10:00 am and 6:00 pm EST, using
the last 7 digits of the VIN as the PO. All orders will be placed as VOR in the order they are received. Orders
received after local VOR cut-off time will be shipped the following day.
Multiple requests on the same VIN will be cancelled.

and/or corrected, obtain a label (SD 92-431) and:
A. Emboss your BMW center warranty number in
the middle of the label (1);
B. Punch out code number 671 (2), printed on the
label; and
C. Affix the label to the B-pillar as shown.

If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Campaign, affix the new label next to the old one. Do not affix
one label on top of another one because a number from an underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole
of the new label.
