Introduction
The purpose of this informational bulletin is to identify engine parameter changes that PACCAR implemented in order to
comply with greenhouse gas regulations that took effect on January 1, 2014. The bulletin also provides guidance for
dealers who are asked to alter truck performance parameters (vehicle speed limiter and engine idle shutdown timer) that
affect the greenhouse gas certification.
What is Greenhouse Gas?

EPA and Environmental Canada issued regulations governing vehicle performance characteristics that affect four
greenhouse related gases, carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, methane and air conditioner refrigerants. These new
requirements supplement regulations that directly control engine combustion emissions. Ultimately the requirements are
designed to improve vehicle fuel economy.
The EPA explains their approach to reduce greenhouse gas impact from transportation on their website. In addition they
explain how their regulations are extending out to heavy duty vehicles on a separate tab of that website.
The Original Equipment Manufacturer certified all aerodynamic devices and lightweight components to comply with
greenhouse gas and fuel efficiency standards. Low rolling resistance tires are also installed from the factory to comply
with the regulation. In addition, PACCAR uses programmable engine settings to limit the vehicle top speed and the idle
timer

Procedure
Why does the service department need to know about Greenhouse Gas
regulation?
A customer may enter your service shop with the complaint that they cannot drive faster than 64 mph and/or their
vehicle shuts off after 5 minutes of idling.
If such a situation presents itself and the vehicle has this label on the door jamb, with the Greenhouse Gas related
codes, VSL, (S), (E), or (D) for vehicle speed limits and/or IRT (5) or (E) for the engine idle timer, it is important to
let the customer know that the vehicle is performing according to factory specifications, as identified by the options
on the vehicle at the time of order, and is certified per greenhouse gas regulations. PACCAR vehicles are
configured with the following defaults for greenhouse gas certification parameters:
VSLT (vehicle speed limit)

These default parameters are set in accordance to EPA guidelines to support Peterbilt Motors greenhouse gas
certification.

What to do if these settings are incorrect?
If after taking delivery of the vehicle, the customer determines that the settings are incompatible with the
customer’s application and need to be changed the dealer can submit a request for change using this form:

The dealer will need to obtain the following information from the customer:
1.

Direct contact number

Customer name

3.

Fleet name

4.

VIN (and all related VINs if this is a fleet owner)

Inform the customer that the dealer will be in contact with them to discuss the results of the change request. If the
change request is approved, the dealer will need to schedule a time for the vehicle to be re-programmed.
Once Peterbilt has received, processed and reviewed the request, they will contact the dealer to discuss the
options available. Each request must be evaluated regarding the vehicle specifications and any chassis specific
vehicle regulatory restrictions.

What is involved to get these setting changed if the request is approved?
Peterbilt will contact the dealer if a request has been approved. The dealer can expect a response from Peterbilt
within 2-4 weeks. At this time the dealer will be provided instructions to complete the change if the request is
approved. (The specific instructions are different depending on the request and the vehicle configuration.) The
dealer then will need to contact the customer and schedule a time to have the service performed.

Who can perform this service once it is approved by Peterbilt?
Authorized dealers must perform this service. Customers requesting the change are not permitted to alter these
greenhouse gas features without affecting the greenhouse gas warranty coverage. (Refer to the operator manual
for warranty information regarding greenhouse gas components.)
