Service Action: Remove Water Drain Plugs from E-Box

SITUATION

The water drain plugs for the left- and right-side E-box may clog. This can lead to water
collection/corrosion and allow water to enter the passenger compartment.
CAUSE

The water drain plug slots are too small.
AFFECTED VEHICLES

This Service Action involves F3x Models produced from October 2011 to January 2014.
First check if a Service Action label with a code number 668 is already attached to the B-pillar.
If a code number 668 has been punched out, the Campaign has already been performed and no
further action is necessary.
Vehicles which require this Service Action to be completed will show it as “Open” when checked
either in the "Service Menu" of DCSnet (Dealer Communication System) or with the Key Reader.
PROCEDURE

Remove the water drain plugs from both left and right E-Boxes.
Note: No parts are required.
The following repair procedure shows the right side; the same procedure applies for the left.

1. Raise the vehicle with the
service lift to access the lower
wheel house trim fasteners.

2. Remove the seven fasteners as
shown.
Note: The picture is of the front
passenger’s side wheel house
trim, at the rear side.
Do not remove the wheel.
The wheel is removed for clarity
purposes.

3. Remove the five screws as
shown.

4. Pull the wheel house trim down
partially, in the direction shown,
to expose the oval E-box water
drain plug (1).

5. Remove the water drain plug in
the direction of the arrow and
pull downward. With the drain
plug removed, reach inside the
E-box body opening and remove
any remaining leaves, dirt or
debris.
Reassemble the removed parts in
the reverse order of their
removal.
Complete the same repair
procedure for the driver’s side.
LABEL INSTRUCTIONS

This Service Action has been assigned code number
668. After the vehicle has been checked and/or
corrected, obtain a label (SD 92-431) and:
A. Emboss your BMW center warranty number in
the middle of the label (1);
B. Punch out code number 668 (2), printed on the
label; and
C. Affix the label to the B-pillar as shown.
If the vehicle already has a label from a previous Service Action/Recall Campaign, affix the new
label next to the old one. Do not affix one label on top of another one because a number from an
underlying label could appear in the punched-out hole of the new label.
