This diagnostic is typically Water in Fuel.
NOTICE: Do not over-tighten the water drain valve. Failure to properly tighten the water drain valve may cause
damage to the water drain valve and housing.
NOTE: Water-in-Fuel (WIF) sensor circuitry differs for engines equipped with three-filter fuel systems and those
equipped with two-filter fuel systems. There are also slight differences between KM63 GEN2 two-filter fuel
systems and KM59 GEN1 variants.
Check as follows:
1. Turn the ignition OFF.
2. Take a one quart fuel sample from the fuel filter module by opening the water bowl drain valve and fully draining the
fuel filter in to a clear container.
3. Check for fuel contamination, including Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF), gasoline, kerosene, coolant, etc. Is the fuel
sample contaminated?
a. Yes; if DEF is found in the fuel, Refer to section "Diesel Exhaust Fluid in Fuel".
If coolant is found in the fuel, Refer to section "Fuel in Coolant/Coolant in Fuel".
If gasoline or kerosene is found in the fuel, contact the Customer Support Center at 800-445-1980.
b. No; Go to step 4.
4. Close the water drain valve. Check the fuel sample for water. Is the water content greater than half the amount of fuel?
a. Yes; Go to step 5.
b. No; Go to step 6.
WARNING: ENGINE EXHAUST
To avoid injury from inhaling engine exhaust, always operate the engine in a well-ventilated area.
Engine exhaust is toxic.

WARNING: PERSONAL INJURY
To avoid injury before starting and running the engine, ensure the vehicle is parked on a level
surface, parking brake is set, and the wheels are blocked.
5. Prime the fuel filter module via hand pump (approximately 250 times). Clear the fault code, start the engine and let the
engine run for 15 minutes. Does the fault become active?
a. Yes; repeat steps 1 through 3. If the fault code is still active after steps 1 through 3 have been performed, drain all
water from fuel tank(s) and (if equipped) drain the frame-mounted filter. Release the vehicle.
b. No; release the vehicle.
6. Disconnect the WIF sensor connector.
7. Inspect the WIF harness connector for signs of damage, water intrusion, bent, spread, corroded, pushed out (unseated)
pins or frayed wiring.
a. If signs of damage are present, repair as necessary.
b. If connector shows no signs of damage, Go to step 8.
8. Turn the ignition ON (key ON, engine OFF).
9. Check for power and ground at the WIF sensor harness connector.
Three-filter fuel systems: measure the voltage between pins 1 and 3 of the WIF sensor harness connector.
Two-filter fuel systems: measure the voltage between pins 1 and 4 of the WIF sensor harness connector.
a. If the voltage is greater than 11.5 volts, Go to step 10.
b. If the voltage is less than 11.5 volts, Go to step 11.

10. Check the sensor signal wire on the WIF sensor connector.
Three-filter fuel systems: measure the voltage between pins 2 and 3 of the WIF sensor harness connector.
Two-filter fuel systems: measure the voltage between pins 2 and 4 of the WIF sensor harness connector.
a. If the voltage is between 4.5 and 5.5 volts, replace the WIF sensor, referring to the proper procedure for the
engine being serviced.
Refer to section "Removal of the Water-in-Fuel Sensor - Two-Filter Fuel System".
Refer to section "Removal of the Water-in-Fuel Sensor - Three-Filter Fuel System".
b. If the voltage is less than 4.5 volts, repair the wire between pin 2 of the harness side of the Water-in-Fuel sensor
and pin 57 of the MCM 120-pin connector.
c. If the voltage is greater than 5.5 volts, repair the short between the WIF sensor power circuit, pin 1, and WIF
signal circuit, pin 2. Verify repairs.
11. Measure the voltage between pin 1 on the harness side of the WIF sensor and engine ground (Battery Ground).
a. If the voltage is less than 11.5 volts:
Three-filter fuel systems: repair the wire between pin 1 of the harness side of the Water-In-Fuel sensor and pin 71
of the MCM 120-pin connector.
Two-filter fuel systems:
KM63 GEN2 two-filter fuel systems: repair the wire between pin 1 of the harness side of the Water-In-Fuel
sensor and pin 71 of the MCM 120-pin connector.
KM59 GEN1 two-filter fuel systems: repair the wire between pin 1 of the harness side of the Water-In-Fuel
sensor and pin 62 of the MCM 120-pin connector.
b. If the voltage is greater than 11.5 volts:
Three-filter fuel systems: repair the wire between pin 3 of the harness side of the Water-In-Fuel sensor harness
connector and pin 67 of the MCM 120-pin connector.
Two-filter fuel systems: repair the wire between pin 4 of the harness side of the Water-In-Fuel sensor harness
connector and pin 67 of the MCM 120-pin connector.
12. If a problem still exists, review the previous steps of this diagnostic procedure. If the results are the same, contact
Detroit Customer Support Center at 800-445-1980.
