Extension to 13 years/150,000 miles

INFORMATION

MINI has become aware of a potential problem with the durability of the Electro-Hydraulic Power
(Assist) Steering (EHPS) Pump and Cooling Fan on MY 2002 to 2005 (MINI Cooper and Cooper S
Hardtops and Convertibles), as noted above.
On the vehicles identified above, the warranty coverage for the following components has been
extended to 13 years or 150,000 miles, whichever occurs first, as determined from the original inservice date:


Power steering pump (EHPS); and the



Cooling fan/auxiliary wiring harness

This is a “warranty coverage extension” and not a Recall or Service Action. There is no
immediate repair required except if the MINI vehicle is currently experiencing a problem.
This extended coverage does not apply to the following:


Hydraulic steering gear assembly



Oil carrier (tank)



Supply hose (intake manifold) and return pipe



Pressure hose assembly and set pipe; or



MINI vehicles produced on or after February 10, 2005

Even though this is NOT a Recall, BMW has decided to send a “Customer Notification” letter
to inform customers of the extension of the MINI New Passenger Limited Warranty for the
specific components listed above.
A sample letter is attached.
To assist you in identifying the eligible vehicles, the DCSnet Warranty Vehicle Inquiry has been
updated. Please select the “Vehicle Comment” button to display the extended coverage
information.
SITUATION

On affected vehicles, the electro-hydraulic power steering (EHPS) pump can fail.
PROCEDURE

If the EHPS pump or cooling fan fails during the extended warranty coverage period,
perform the appropriate repair to replace the power steering pump, together with the fan
and, if necessary, the auxiliary wiring harness when a poor or no electrical contact-related
issue exists.
Do not perform this repair as a preventive measure.
For the repair instructions, refer to REP 32 41 030.
The first repair is to be submitted as outlined in the Warranty Information section below.
Should the part fail again, subsequent repairs must be submitted following the normal parts
warranty rules.
Note: Always check the “Vehicle Comments” section first before performing any repairs.

WARRANTY INFORMATION

The warranty coverage for the Electro-Hydraulic Power-Assist Steering Pump (EHPS) and Cooling
Fan has been extended to 13 years or 150,000 miles, whichever occurs first.
This component’s warranty extension applies to the above-listed models only and is transferable.
It is applicable to eligible vehicles that are registered and operated in all 50 states and Puerto Rico.
The existing warranty coverage for all other parts has not changed.

which consists of the last 7 digits of the Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Click on the

Sublet calculation: Reimbursement for used quantities of required power steering fluid (MINI bulk
P/N 83 29 0 429 576 – 1000ml) at dealer net plus handling. Enter this material cost in sublet and
itemize the amount in the claim comment section.
Towing
For MINI vehicles requiring towing for the issue outlined in this Service Information bulletin,
which are not eligible for towing coverage under the MINI Roadside Assistance Program, claim the
related towing expense under Defect Code 32 41 90 12 00, as follows:

power steering pump (EHPS) and cooling fan per the 13 year/150,000 mile warranty.



Retain the “original” towing invoice in your files and attach it to the Repair Order; the
Warranty department may request this documentation during the claim review process.



The towing invoice must show the mileage towed and the total mileage fee, or the hourly fee
if the towing was charged hourly.

Prior Customer Pay Repairs
If a customer requests reimbursement for a previously performed repair, please follow the
procedure below:
Review the customer-pay invoice (MINI dealer or independent repair shop) to ensure it addresses
the issue described in this Service Information bulletin.
Reimburse the customer (labor and parts).
Submit the customer-paid repair expense under Defect Code 32 41 90 12 00, as follows:


Retain the “original” customer pay invoice in your files; this documentation may be
requested by MINI during the claim review process.
