WD53 - Reworking Underbody Protection in Rear Left Wheel Housing (Workshop
Campaign)

Information:
This is to inform you of a voluntary Workshop Campaign on the above-mentioned vehicles. There is
a possibility that some of the underbody protection in the rear left wheel housing was not
applied according to specifications on the affected vehicles due to a programming error at a
production station.
As a result, this area can become corroded over the service life of the vehicle.
Action
Required:
Rework underbody protection in the rear left wheel housing and repaint the affected area.
Information
Please inform the customer during vehicle acceptance about the measure that must be carried out.
If necessary, also let the customer know that there can be a smell of paint for a while after the affected
area has been painted.

Primer, e.g. two-component primer Epoxidprimer
Paint in vehicle color
Sandpaper, P120 to P180 grain
Commercially available body brush (approx. 25 mm wide)
De-greasing cleaning agent, e.g. isopropanol
Adhesive tape
Protective film/masking tape
Clean, lint-free cloth
* The color of the underbody protection to be used must match the vehicle paintwork. Bright or dark
underbody protection must therefore be used, depending on the color.

Clean the affected area in the rear left wheel housing

Then sand the affected area in the rear left wheel
housing using P120 to P180 grain sandpaper.

Clean the affected area thoroughly to remove all
sanding dust. Blow sanding dust off the affected area
using compressed air if necessary.

Mask adjacent areas and components with suitable
protective film or masking tape.

Apply primer to the affected area and leave it to dry. Read and follow the manufacturer's specifications provided with the primer.

Information
To ensure an even application (spray pattern) of the sealing compound when using the Multi-press
telescopic spray gun V.A.G 1761/1, apply the sealant on a piece of cardboard as a test before
using it on the vehicle.

Apply underbody protection to the affected area
using a suitable spray gun, e.g. V.A.G 1761/1
Multi-press telescopic spray gun or V.A.G 1628
Cartridge gun, or similar with a layer thickness
of 1.0 mm – 1.3 mm and leave it to dry Applying

10 Then spot-paint the affected area in vehicle color
and leave it to dry.

11 Remove protective film or masking tape.
Information
Before re-installing the wheel housing liner, make sure that the reworked area in the wheel housing is
completely dry and hardened.
If not, the paintwork can become damaged, resulting in corrosion in this area.
12 Install rear left wheel housing liner Workshop Manual '536919 Removing and installing rear wheel
housing liner'.
13 Install left rear wheel Workshop Manual '440519 Removing and installing wheel'.
14 Remove the vehicle from the lifting platform.
15 Enter the workshop campaign in the Warranty and Maintenance booklet.
Attachment "B": Claim Submission - Workshop Campaign WD53
Warranty claims should be submitted via WWS/PQIS.
Open campaigns may be checked by using either the PIWIS Vehicle Information system or through PQIS
Job Creation.
Labor will be automatically inserted when Technician is selected in WWS/PQIS.
If necessary, the required part numbers will need to be manually entered into warranty system by the
dealer administrator.
