VON # 84 SAF-T-Liner HDX Turbo Coolant Line Replacement.

Enclosed are copies of the customer notification letter and the repair procedure for customers
who have purchased certain Thomas Built Bus Type D HDX units with CNG engines.
Thomas has determined that the fitting and/or hose located on the top of the engine could
crack.
This is a universal notification sent to all dealers. You may or may not have customers in
your area affected by this notification. If owners in your area are involved, we have enclosed
a listing of those customers. If you have a printout and any of the units on it is still in your
possession, or if you have a unit in for service, it is your responsibility to ensure the repair is
performed before the unit is delivered to the customer.
Please refer to the attached repair producer. Also read the warranty portion of the repair
procedure. Codes to be used on your claim are found on the repair procedure. You will need
to order your parts for this VON directly through your local Parts Distribution Center.
PLEASE NOTE: THIS VON WILL EXPIRE 12 MONTHS FROM THE RELEASE DATE.

This section is intended to provide general guidance for replacing fitting and elbow at the
turbo connection.
1) Make sure the ignition is in the “Off” position. Chock the tires and disconnect the
batteries.
2) Locate hose above the top Constant torque clamp.

3) Locate the elbow that is located near the turbo on the Cummins CNG engine. It will
have a Constant torque clamp on each end and then there will be one on other side of
fitting. Loosen the one at the entrance to engine and the one that is on other side of
fitting using a 5/16 socket. Remove and discard fitting, (Elbow hose if installing new
one) and all three constant torque clamps. (See Figure 1 for location of clamps and
which ones to loosen and discard)

4) Install new fitting into the elbow hose. Next install and loosely tighten new Constant
torque clamps on each end of Elbow. See Figure 2 for how this assembly should look.

REPAIR PROCEDURE

5) Remove old constant torque clamp from hose that other end of fitting was inserted
and put new clamp onto that hose. Insert new fitting in this hose from elbow and push
other end down on fitting on engine.
6) Turn constant torque clamps so that the nut is facing you. Tighten down each one
using 5/16 socket. (Do not exceed 55 in-lbs. on these clamps) Verify that all of the constant
torque clamps will not rub against any of the metal hoses on the engine. If it will then
readjust clamp head to different location.
7) Verify that all clamps are tightened and secure as well as verify that the fitting that is
attaching elbow and hose is inserted correctly.
8) Connect the batteries and remove the tire chocks.

Warranty
If a failure is not found, this procedure is considered preventive and warranty does not apply.
Normal warranty applies. See Table 1 for OWL VMRS codes and labor allowance information.
