Volvo has determined that certain vehicles may have engines that have been incorrectly labeled.
The label in question is the engine emissions certification label.
An owner notification letter (see attached) has been issued that instructs the owner to contact
Volvo by calling 1‐866‐548‐6586. This is a dedicated line for this recall with representatives who
will help the customer schedule an appointment with their local Volvo dealer or service facility
and to assist the dealer by sending the correct label in advance to the repairing dealer and/or
service facility.
The schedule for this initial release is as follows:
• September 28, 2012 vehicle list posted to the Trucks Dealer Portal.
• September 28, 2012, repair instructions released electronically to dealers (attached).
• September 28, 2012, owner notices mailed to customers.
• October 1, 2012 vehicles loaded in eWarranty.

DEAR VOLVO TRUCK OWNER:

Volvo has determined that certain vehicles contain engines may have been incorrectly labeled. You are
receiving this notice because Volvo has identified one or more of your vehicles as having an engine
that was incorrectly labeled.
Provided below is important information pertaining to this recall. Volvo recommends that you take the
time to read through this information and take the steps identified to address this issue.
Please note that in some states, such as California who have implemented a DMV tie-in program, open
recalls must be corrected prior to registration or license plate renewal; therefore, please make an
appointment as soon as possible to avoid potential delays when registering or renewing the license
plate on the vehicle.
We regret any inconvenience this may cause to your operation, but hope you will appreciate our sincere
efforts to demonstrate our commitment to our customers.

PRECAUTIONS YOU
CAN TAKE:

There are no precautions you can take other than having your vehicle
repaired by a Volvo Parts and Service Center.

TIME REQUIRED FOR
THE REPAIR:

The labor time required to repair your vehicle is approximately 30 minutes.

WHAT YOU SHOULD
DO:

Please Call 866-548-6586 to reach one of our customer assistance
representatives who will assist with scheduling an appointment to have the
engine label replaced on your vehicle. The full 17 digit VIN of your
vehicle will be required; please make sure that you have this handy when
making the call. A new engine label will be sent to a Volvo representative
(e.g. dealer or Volvo authorized servicing facility) in your area, The label
will be installed at no charge.

LEASED VEHICLES:

If you are a Lessor of vehicles subject to this Notice, you have an
obligation to provide a copy of this Notice to all Lessees within 10 days of
your receipt of this Notice. Further, you must maintain a record, which
identifies the Lessee(s) to whom you send a copy of this letter, the date you
send this letter and the Vehicle Identification Number(s) of the vehicle(s)
that you have leased to that lessee. For purposes of this Notice, the term
Lessor means: a person or entity that is the owner, as reflected on the
vehicle’s title, of any five or more leased vehicles, as of the date of
notification by the manufacturer of the existence of the emissions-related
defect in one or more of the leased motor vehicles.

SUBJECT: D16 2011, and 2010 EMISSION LABEL RECALL
EMISSIONS RECALL INFORMATION:
There are thirty-seven (37) 2011 D16 engines and twenty-three (23) 2010 D16 engines, which were
sent out with an incorrect emission certification label.
An owner notification letter (see attached) has been issued that instructs the owner to contact Volvo
by calling 1-866-548-6586. This is a dedicated line for this recall with representatives who will help
the customer schedule an appointment with their local Volvo dealer or service facility and to assist
the dealer by sending the correct label in advance to the repairing dealer and/or service facility.
IMPORTANT NOTE:
The label is serialized with the engine serial number therefore there is a unique label for each
engine/vehicle.
To verify or determine if a particular vehicle is affected by this recall (or any other recall),
you should enter the Vehicle Identification Number into the VIN search field in eWarranty,
and the screen will display any open recall.
If a “Dealer Listing” is enclosed it identifies the vehicles that were sold or shipped to your
dealership. Be sure to check the eWarranty Vehicle Detail screen before performing the recall to
verify that the recall is still open.
REPAIR:
IMPORTANT NOTE:
Before removing the label from the engine, verify that the serial number on the new label matches
the serial number on the label on the engine. If the serial numbers do not match, please call 1-866548-6586.

WARNING: Use appropriate equipment when climbing up to the top of the engine to replace
the label.
The recall repair will consist of using a heat gun and scraper to remove old label, clean valve cover
and install new engine emission label. Scrap the old label locally.
TIME ALLOWANCE:
0.3 hours per vehicle.
Note: If the recall repair is the only repair being administered, then a take charge time
allowance of 0.3 hr can be claimed.
PARTS:
Direct Ship of Vehicle Engine Specific Certification Label (866-548-6586).
DEALER PARTS INVENTORY:
Dealer parts inventory is not affected by this recall.
NOTE: A campaign completion label will be provided with the new emissions label. To signify that
the campaign has been completed, use a permanent type marker (such as a Sharpie®) to write the
completion date (xx/xx/xx) and Dealer Code on the label. The label is to be applied to the inside of
the passenger door as shown in the illustration.
