Required Replacement Parts Information

CONDITION SUMMARY:
Situation: On a fix-on-fail basis only, a production update is available allowing the replacement of the original
M12 steering outer ball joint with a M14 steering outer ball joint. When performing this repair, several other
components also need to be replaced.
Action: Refer to the Parts list, SSM41218, and the Diagnostic and Repair Procedures outlined below if
steering gear tie rod / tie rod end diagnosis or component replacement is necessary.

DIAGNOSTIC PROCEDURE
STEERING GEAR LINKAGE CHECK
1. Refer to Workshop Manual, section 100-02: Jacking and Lifting, and raise vehicle to allow front wheels free
movement.
NOTE: Use hand force only - not body weight. Refer to SSM41218.
2. Refer to SSM41218 and with steering in the straight-ahead position, hold road wheel with fingertips at the
9:00 and 3:00 positions and apply minimal force through fingertips:
•
If the movement is the same or less than the maximum allowable movement by design shown in video
clips 1 and 3, no further action is required.
NOTE: Use hand force only - not body weight. Refer to SSM41218.
3. Refer to SSM41218 and with steering in the straight-ahead position, hold road wheel with fingertips at the
9:00 and 3:00 positions and apply minimal force through fingertips:
•
If the movement is the same or more than the movement shown in video clips 2 and 4, remove the
steering gear bellows and retest.
•
If the movement is caused only by the inner ball joint due to normal wear and tear, with no movement in
the steering gear, refer to REPLACE TIE ROD - SET below and replace the tie rods with the same type
(M12 or M14) tie rod kits (inner and outer) as currently installed in the vehicle.
•
If the movement is caused only by the outer ball joint due to normal wear and tear, with no movement in
the steering gear, refer to REPLACE TIE END below and replace the affected tie rod end(s) with the same
type (M12 or M14) tie rod end (outer only) as currently installed in the vehicle.
•
If the movement is caused by the steering gear due to normal wear and tear or a performance concern
and not the inner or outer ball joints, refer to REPLACE STEERING GEAR below and replace the steering
gear with the same type (M12 or M14) steering gear as currently installed in the vehicle.
•
If the movement is caused by damage to the steering gear, tie rods, or tie rod ends, refer to the table for
the appropriate repair procedure and required parts. Normal Warranty policies and procedures apply.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
REPLACE TIE ROD(S) - SET
1. Refer to Workshop Manual, section 211-03: Steering Linkage, and replace the affected tie rod(s) (inner and
outer).
2. If no other repairs are necessary, proceed to PERFORM FOUR-WHEEL ALIGNMENT below.
REPLACE TIE ROD END(S)
1. Refer to Workshop Manual section 211-03: Steering Linkage, and replace the affected tie rod end(s).
2. If no other repairs are necessary, proceed to PERFORM FOUR-WHEEL ALIGNMENT below.
REPLACE STEERING GEAR
1. Refer to Workshop Manual, section 211-02: Power Steering, and replace the steering gear.
2. If no other repairs are necessary, proceed to PERFORM FOUR-WHEEL ALIGNMENT below.
REPLACE WHEEL KNUCKLES - BOTH SIDES (IF NECESSARY)
1. If necessary as indicated by repair table above, refer to Workshop Manual, section 204-01: Front
Suspension, and replace both front wheel knuckles.
2. If no other repairs are necessary, proceed to PERFORM FOUR-WHEEL ALIGNMENT below.
PERFORM FOUR-WHEEL ALIGNMENT
1. Refer to Workshop Manual, section 204-00: Suspension System - General Information, and perform a FourWheel Alignment.
