Passenger’s Airbag Replacement
BACKGROUND
American Honda is inspecting passenger airbags from
selected vehicles. With the customer’s consent,
replace the airbag. The passenger’s airbag will be
collected by American Honda.

REPLACEMENT PROCEDURE
NOTE: Don’t deploy the airbag. American Honda will
contact your parts department to arrange for the return
of the airbag once the warranty claim has been
submitted.

If the customer agrees to participate in this study, order
the airbag through the controlled parts system. To
avoid inconveniencing the customer, it may be
necessary to request overnight shipping if the part is
not available from your facing parts center. If the
customer needs a rental, American Honda will pay 1
day for a rental car to help avoid any customer
inconvenience.

1. Disconnect the battery negative cable, and wait at
least 3 minutes before beginning work.

The color of the new airbag cover may not match the
coloring of the dashboard. Ask the customer if they
would like the original airbag cover installed or the new
cover that may not match.

2. Lower the glove box:
• Remove the passenger’s dashboard lower cover.
• While holding the glove box, remove the glove
box stop on each side.
3. Remove the passenger’s airbag:

This is a voluntary action, not a campaign. You must
have the customer’s permission before replacing any
components on eligible vehicles because replacing any
part without the customer’s permission is illegal. After
the study is complete, this procedure will be
discontinued.

• Disconnect the front passenger’s airbag 4P
connector from the dashboard harness B 4P
connector.

• Remove the three mounting nuts from the
bracket. Do not reuse the nuts.

4. Separate the original airbag from the original airbag
cover:
• Place a clean shop towel on your workbench,
then place the airbag, with the cover side down,
on the towel.
• Insert a trim tool at both ends of the airbag’s front
row of hooks as shown.

Remove and replace.

• Cover the airbag cover and dashboard with a
cloth, then carefully pry with a screwdriver to lift
the airbag out of the dashboard.
- If the customer wants to keep the original
airbag cover that matches the dashboard, go
to step 4.
- If the customer wants the new cover, go to
step 6.

• With the help of an assistant, pry up on both trim
tools to release the hooks from the lid, and
remove the airbag.
NOTE: Use this same procedure to remove the
replacement airbag from the new cover.

5. Install the original cover on the replacement airbag.

6. Install the replacement passenger’s side airbag into
the dashboard.
7. Install the three new mounting nuts, and torque
them to 9.8 N.m (7.2 lb-ft).

8. Reconnect the passenger’s airbag 4P connector to
the dashboard harness B 4P connector.
9. Reinstall the glove box.
10. Reconnect the negative battery cable.
11. Confirm the airbag is installed properly by turning
the ignition switch to ON (II). The SRS indicator
should come on for about 6 seconds, then turn off.
12. Return the undeployed airbag to the parts
department for collection by American Honda.
