PRELIMINARY INFORMATION
Subject:

Power Steering or Reduced Power Message Displayed in DIC, DTC C0475 or P2138 Set

Models:

2010-2012 Chevrolet Malibu
This PI is being revised to add the 2012 model year. Please discard PI0116A.

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern
Some customers may comment about a “Power Steering” or “Reduced Power” message displayed in the DIC.
When checking the vehicle for DTCs, the power steering control module (PSCM) may report DTC C0475 set in
history or current, or a P2138 may be found in the ECM.
This condition may be caused by a low-level water leak into the IP structure. This water leak may contaminate the
PSCM and/or motor assembly, or the IP to body harness interconnect X 206, resulting in the described condition.

Recommendation/Instructions
Inspect the vehicle for accumulated water or water spotting in two common areas:

Remove the IP outer trim cover and inspect for water/spotting within the end opening on the IP (1).

Repositioning the front carpet, inspect for water/spotting between the carpet and the floorboard.

If evidence of water is found in either of these locations, remove the roof ditch molding on the affected side and
inspect the ditch for possible voids in the sealer at any of the following locations:

At the windshield header and between the roof panel to A-pillar seam

• Between the roof panel to B-pillar seam
If a water leak has been identified using the above procedure, repair the water leak before repairing the EPS
system or the IP to body harness interconnect X 206. Refer to PI0096A for the repair procedure.
If a roof ditch leak is not found but there is water, or evidence of water (spotting) on any interior components (per
PI0096A), open a TAC case for further assistance.
Proceed with the repair procedure of the PSCM, or connector X 206 as needed.

For vehicles repaired under warranty, use the applicable published labor operation for the repair performed.
