Fairing Lanyard Latch Rub

SP 891-005, Fairing Lanyard Latch Rub

(May 2012)

Certain VNL model trucks built between 3/1/2011 and 9/30/2011 with removable mid chassis

fairings may experience damage to the fuel tank. This damage is due to a potential rub

between the chassis fairing lanyard latch and the tank. To address this issue remove the left

and right side fairings, add a new clipping bracket, and re-install the fairings.

Procedure

You must read and understand the precautions and guidelines in Service Information,

group 80, "General Safety Practices, Cab" before performing this procedure. If you are

not properly trained and certified in this procedure, ask your supervisor for training before

you perform it.
DANGER

Before working on a vehicle, set the parking brakes, place the transmission in neutral,

and block the wheels. Failure to do so can result in unexpected vehicle movement and

can cause serious personal injury or death.
DANGER

Do not attempt to repair or service a vehicle without the proper training, tools and service

information. Failure to do so may result in component damage, serious injury or death.
DANGER

Scaffolding or other suitable work platform must be used when performing this procedure.

Failure to do so may result in a fall causing serious injury or death

Note: This procedure applies to both sides of the vehicle.

1 Secure the vehicle for service by parking it on a flat level surface, applying the parking

brake, chocking the rear wheel, and placing the transmission in neutral.

Unlatch and open the front side fairing.

3 Disconnect all cables from the negative (ground) battery terminals to prevent personal

injury from electrical shock and prevent damage to electrical components.

Unlatch and remove the rear side fairing. Unlatch the lanyard. Move the side fairing

to a secure location to prevent damage.

Remove the chassis fairing bracket fastener.

Note: Save the fastener for reassembly.

Note: Mark the location of the chassis side fairing bracket to the fuel tank bracket for

later reassembly. The brackets may move upon the removal of the chassis side fairing

bracket fastener.

Using the fastener previously removed, Install the new lanyard bracket into position.

Torque fastener to 30 ± 5 Nm (22 ± 4 ft-lb).

Install and latch the lanyard to the new bracket. Close the rear side fairing.

8 Reconnect all previously removed cables to the negative (ground) and positive battery

terminals.
