Slack Adjuster Replacement

On the steering axle of certain VOLVO VN trucks, the zerk fitting on the Meritor slack
adjuster comes into contact with the bolt head of the steering arm causing the fitting to break.

Procedure
Removal
1 Apply the parking brake.
2 Raise hood.
3 Remove the cotter keys and clevis pins.
4 Remove the e-clip.
5 Remove the slack adjuster.
Installation
1
Install the replacement slack adjuster and secure with e-clip.
2 Remove the adjustment pawl and spring to allow the adjuster to rotate clockwise and
counter-clockwise.
3 Adjust slack up to clevis and install both pins and clips.
4 Adjust slack to specifications. Brakes that have air chambers shipped to the
manufacturing plant with fully caged chambers are adjusted by: Tightening the slack
adjuster adjusting screw until the brake shoes touch the drum; Back off the slack adjuster
adjusting screw ½ turn.
5 Reinstall adjustment pawl and spring and torque to 17.6–24.4 Nm (156–216 in-lb).
6 Check for proper operation.
Use same procedure on the opposite side of the vehicle.
