PRIORITY:
Vehicles in Operation
APPLICABILITY:
2012 Karma![]()
MARKET REGION:
U.S., Canada, Europe
PURPOSE:
The tire pressure monitor system uses the Fisker
Workshop Tester, Vehicle Control Module (VCM), and
four tire pressure monitor sensors (TPMS) to perform the TPMS Learn function.
The TPMS Learn procedure must be performed after every tire rotation, VCM replacement, or sensor
replacement. The VCM must learn the sensor IDs in the proper sequence to determine correct sensor
location. The first learned ID is assigned to the left front location, the second to right front, the third to right
rear and the fourth to left rear. This service bulletin will detail the process of performing the self learn
process for the vehicle’s tire pressure monitoring system.

TPMS Learn Preconditions
Prior to initializing the TPMS Learn procedure; the following preconditions must be met:
1a. The vehicle’s software baseline has been updated to at least Baseline 612.
1b. The Fisker
Workshop Tester has been updated to the latest version (RP 3.7).
1c. Ensure that any other Karma
vehicle is not within 6 feet (2 meters) proximity of the vehicle
being forced to learn sensor IDs.
NOTE: Stray signals from other TPMS equipped vehicles just driving by can be inadvertently learned. If
any random horn chirps are heard from the vehicle while performing the learn procedure, most likely a
stray sensor has been learned and the procedure will need to be cancelled and repeated.
1d. Verify that the tire pressures are at their cold tire inflation nominal values. The cold tire inflation
pressure specifications are printed on a label located on the driver’s side B-pillar.

2a. Using a lift, elevate the vehicle so that the wheels are off of the ground. Position the wheels so
that the valve stems are oriented according to Figure 2 below.
Tire Positioning for TPMS Learning
– Before releasing air from each tire, it’s important to ensure that the tire sensor is in its optimal position
to be detected by the RSA antenna.
– The “good” position areas for each TPMS/tire valve stem are highlighted in yellow (see images below.
– 12 to 2 o’clock (RR and LF wheel)
– 10 to 12 o’clock (LR and RF wheel)
– If a TPMS/valve stem isn’t in the “good” region, rotate tire accordingly.
– Once a tire clocking is corrected, proceed with the manual learn sequence.
– Repeat this tire clocking step whenever a tire is seen out of position.

2c. Turn the vehicle on to SYSTEM READY mode; put the vehicle into Drive.
2d. Select the TPMS Learn from the menu in the Fisker
Workshop Tester.
> Module Diagnostics
> Vehicle Control
> Vehicle Control Module
> Basic Diagnosis
> TPMS Learn
2e. To initiate the process, press the learn button in the bottom right-hand corner of the service
tool.
– A single chirp of the horn will indicate successful process start.
2f. Starting with the left front tire and moving around the vehicle in a clockwise direction (LF – RF –
RR - LR), release 10psi/0.7bar or greater of air from each tire within 30 seconds to facilitate a
Rapid Pressure Change signal transmission from the sensor.
– The VCM will detect the signal and will then learn the sensor ID. The vehicle will chirp the
horn one time to confirm the sensor has been learned.
– If after 1 minute, no chirp is recognized, release another 10psi/0.7bar or more from the tire
within 30 seconds.
NOTE: The learn process, including the horn chirp, may take up to 6 minutes per tire.

2g. After receiving the confirmation single horn chirp, the operator must wait 20 seconds before
moving to the next tire in the sequence and will have a time limit of 2 minutes to release air from
the next tire in the sequence.
2h. After the last tire (left rear) has completed the learning sequence, the horn will chirp twice
indicating successful learning of the ID’s are complete.
– Upon completion, re-inflate the tires to their specified cold tire pressure.
IMPORTANT: If the learn attempt fails, the VCM will exit the learn process and the horn will chirp three
times to indicate failure. Before restarting the learn procedure, please do the following;
● All tire pressures must be reset to the cold tire inflation pressure specifications.
● After the last tire is re-inflated, you must wait 15 minutes before attempting to restart the learn
procedure
● Press the VCM reset button (bottom right of the screen) on the Workshop Tester and then the exit
button (This will put the vehicle into an off awake state with the power mode = off).
● Return to step 2d to restart the process.
2i. Upon successful completion of the process (two horn chirps), press the VCM reset button
(bottom right of the screen above exit) to complete the TPMS Learn procedure. This will put the
vehicle into an off awake state with the power mode = off.
2j. After the VCM reset is complete, select exit to return to the main screen.
2k. The Tire Pressure Monitor Sensor Learn procedure is now complete and all TPMS IDs should
be learned by the vehicle.
NOTE: To ensure that a vehicle has been repaired, it is required to test drive the vehicle a minimum of
15 minutes above 25 MPH to ensure the TPMS light does not return.
