On Volvo VN vehicles with 11L, 13L, and ISX engines built between July 2007 and
December 2011, block heater cables with thermostat controls have been found to be non–
functioning. The thermostat was wired parallel to the heating element. This did not allow
for the heater to be turned on or off based on engine temperature. The new block heater
cable with thermostat is wired in series, correcting the functionality. Follow the procedure
below to correct affected vehicles.

Note: The engine block heater connection and thermostat connection branches are labeled.

Procedure
You must read and understand the precautions and guidelines in Service Information,
Function Group 3, “Electrical Safety Practices” before performing this procedure. If you
are not properly trained and certified in this procedure, ask your supervisor for training
before you perform it.
1 Remove the left side fairing, if applicable.
2 Remove all cables from ground (negative) battery terminals to prevent personal injury
from electrical shock and prevent damage to electrical components.
Note: Verify which cable is required. Use 21876118 when the 120v fuel heater is
installed. Use 21875096 without fuel heater.
3 Disconnect the 120v cable from the cab receptacle marked “ Engine Heater “, by
depressing the detent pin inwards and pulling out the cable.
4 Disconnect the indicator lamp connectors located at the cab receptacle.
5 Cut and remove all cable ties securing the harness to the vehicle and engine.
6 Disconnect the cable harness from the engine block heater, 120v thermostat and (if
equipped) fuel filter heater element.
7 Remove the cable harness from the vehicle.

8 Install the replacement cable harness into position on the vehicle and cable tie loosely.
9 Connect the cable harness to the engine block heater, 120v thermostat and (if equipped)
fuel filter heater element.
10 Connect the indicator lamp connectors.
11 Connect the 120v cable to the cab receptacle marked “ Engine Heater “. Secure all
cable ties.
12 Install all previously removed cables to the ground (negative) battery terminals.
13 Install the left side fairing, if applicable.
Note: Before discarding removed parts; disable by cutting cable in several places, render
unusable.
