EPA07/EPA10 DD Platform EGR Delta Pressure Sensor

NOTE: This document replaces 10 TS-20.

ISSUE
The EPA07/10 DD Platform EGR Delta Pressure Sensor has been replaced by an improved
sensor. The EGR venturi pipe, sensor mounting bolts, and engine sensor harness have also
changed to accommodate the new sensor. The new parts became effective November 2, 2011,
with DD15 engine S/N: 472903S0103639 and DD13 engine S/N: 471903S0103500. There were
no software or fuel map changes. See Figure 1 for a comparison of the old and new sensors.

Also note that DDC has been receiving a high number of warranty returned EGR Delta Pressure
Sensors that have tested with no trouble found. Most of these sensors were replaced without a
functional test being performed, and were replaced due to observations of soot plugging and
moisture in the sensor.

REQUIRED ACTION
The troubleshooting procedures for EGR Delta Pressure Sensor fault codes (SPN 411) were
revised in December, 2009 to include a functional test. It is essential that this functional test is
performed before replacing an EGR Delta Pressure Sensor. Do NOT replace the sensor if it
passes the functional test. The functional test works with the old and new sensors.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
The following functional test procedure was added.
1. Using DDDL/DDRS, monitor the EGR Delta Pressure Sensor voltage (pin 109) with the
ignition ON, but the engine OFF.
2. Is the EGR Delta Pressure Sensor voltage between 0.55 and 0.83 volts?
a. If yes, the sensor and wiring are OK.
b. If no, test the wiring and connector. If no wiring or connector issues are found,
replace the sensor. After replacing the sensor, use DDDL/DDRS to perform the
EGR Delta P Sensor Recalibration service routine under the Actions » EGR
menu. The service routine works with the old and new sensors.
Do NOT replace the sensor if it passes the functional test. Rarely is the sensor plugged with
soot. A thin layer of soot inside the sensor ports is acceptable. If moisture is found in the sensor,
simply shake out the excess moisture and re-install.

NOTICE:
Do NOT blow out the sensor with compressed air as this can damage the sensor.
If the EGR Delta Pressure Sensor is suspected, it is important to remove the sensor and inspect
the EGR delivery pipe venturi ports for plugging. This is a known issue that can cause engine
performance problems, often with no fault codes logged. Reference Technical Service letter
10 TS-12. If the venturi ports are plugged, clean the ports by referencing section 6.13 in the
EPA07/10 DD Platform Electronics and Troubleshooting Manual (DDC-SVC-MAN-0084).

(DDC-SVC-MAN-0084).
REQUIRED MATERIAL
If the EGR Delta Pressure Sensor is truly faulty, Table 1 provides a list of the correct service kit
part numbers for the new sensor. Stock of the former EGR Delta Pressure Sensor cannot
be returned.

CLAIM PROCESS
Normal in-warranty procedures apply. Proactive removal of properly functioning EGR Delta
Pressure Sensors is not allowed under warranty.
If the service kit is being installed during a warrantable failure (warranty or ESC), use the
following claim information in Table 2.
