Introduction

As a final assembly step, all fasteners were tightened to the correct
torque specifications.

Labor time allowances shown in this bulletin result from labor time
studies performed on Meritor 14X series forward-rear and rear-rear
differential carriers.

Service Procedures

Labor time allowances in this bulletin can be used to address
warranty issues that relate to repairs on Meritor components.

All labor time allowance procedures were performed according to
Meritor Maintenance Manual MM-0970, MT-14X Series
Single-Reduction Forward Differential Carriers on Tandem Axles;
and Maintenance Manual MM-0990, Amboid Rear Differential
Carrier, Rear/Rear Carrier on MT-40-14X Series Tandem Drive
Axles. To obtain these publications, visit literature on demand at

Procedure Timing

Labor Time Standards

Time study procedures were performed according to industry
standards and developed by an experienced, independent firm that
specializes in heavy and medium duty trucks, automotive service
publications and labor standards development.

Each step reflects the actual time used for that repair.
A technician who is familiar with a repair procedure can perform
that procedure more quickly. To arrive at the time reported, each
repair was repeated several times to allow averaging.

NOTE: OEM published carrier R & R labor time should be added,
where appropriate, to generate an overall Service Repair Time (SRT).

The allowances given here include disassembly, part cleaning,
adjustment, correct assembly and inspection. Each repair time listed
includes a description of the operation and the components
involved.

The labor time allowances published in this bulletin are adjusted
upward by 40 percent from the average actual repair time to allow
for variation in equipment, facilities, parts and tool procurement,
normal interruptions, and technician’s personal time. This
adjustment is common in the truck industry.

Tools and Work Practices
Common air and hand tools were used to disassemble and
assemble the components, unless otherwise specified.
For assembly, air tools were used only in areas that did not
adversely affect the integrity of components and fasteners.
For assembly and disassembly of lighter components and smaller
fasteners, air ratchets or hand tools were used.
