Subject: Whine Nolse From Rear Asie (Diagnose and Replace Rear Shaft With
A Tuned Torsional Damper Rear Propeller Shaft)

Condition

Soma customers may comment on a slight ede
whine heard only at certain speeds, typically
bahweer 72-98 kinvh (45-60 mph).

Cause
“Inherent ding and pinion gear whine.

All gear driven unite, such 48 automotive rear axles,
produce some level of noise that cannot be eliminated
with conventional adjustments and repairs. “Inherent
axle noise can be desaited es a alight nalss heard
only at 4 ceartaln apeed [typically between 72-96 km/h
{45-60 mph} on most Ganeral Motors® trucks}. The
presence of this noise ie not indicative of & functional
concem with the axle assembly. However, some
customers may find that this "Inherent" axie noise Is
unacceptable.

Correction

Replace the rear propeller shaft with a tuned torsional
damper shaft ONLY after dlagnosle concludes that

it is an “inherent” rear axle nolse and no physical
damage or incerreact adjuatrant existe.

Diagnostic information and Procedure for Rear
Axia Noise
1. Diagnostic Starting Point - Rear Drive Axia.
Refer to S! Gocument ID #806977.

Rear Propeller Shaft Replacement
1. Ralse the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking
the Vehicle in General Information. Hater to SI
Document ID #737171.
2. Remove the bolts and the yoke retainers from the
rear axte pinion yoke.
Notice: When remeving the propeller shaft, do not
attempt to rercera the shaft 4y pounding on the yake
eare of using a tool between the yoks and the universal
jownt. If the propeller shatt is ramoved by using such
means, the ingection joints may fracture and lead to
Premature Fallure of the joint
3. Silda the propeller shatt forward in ordar ta
disconnect the propellar shaft from the rear ade
pinion yokes.

. Slide the propellar shaft rearward In order to

disconnect the propeller shafl from the tranemiaaion
or transfer case.

~ Remove tha propeller shatt from the vehicle

and discard,

- Install the new tuned tarsional damper propeller

shaft {see Parts Information below) Into the
transmission or iranster case.

install the propeller shaft to the rear ade
pinion yoke.
install the yoke retainers and bolte,

Tighten

Tighten the yoke retainer bolts ip 25 N.m (19 Ib ft).

Lower the velhieia.

. Fload test the vebice.
